HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to congratulate Charles Matthews on the
4occasion of his retirement as president and chief executive
5officer of Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Charles Matthews earned his Bachelor of Arts in
7Economics from Talladega College in Alabama and his master's
8degree in Finance from Clark Atlanta University School of
9Business in Georgia; he also completed the University of
10Pennsylvania Wharton Business School's executive program in
11utility finance; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Before taking the helm at Peoples Gas and North
13Shore Gas, Charles Matthews spent nine years in executive and
14leadership positions at We Energies, where he served as senior
15vice president of wholesale energy and fuels and customer
16solutions; before joining We Energies, he served as president
17and chief executive officer of Jamaica Public Service Company
18Limited, a subsidiary of the Mirant Corporation, where he
19helped structure and then led the company's transition from
20government-owned to private ownership; and
 
21    WHEREAS, Charles Matthews has spent the last seven years
22as the president and chief executive officer of Peoples Gas

1and North Shore Gas, where he managed the daily operations,
2strategy, and administrative activities of WEC Energy Group's
3two Illinois utilities that collectively provide safe,
4reliable natural gas service to nearly one million customers
5in the City of Chicago and 54 communities in its northern
6suburbs; his guidance and leadership have been noted as key to
7the company's success in moving forward while significantly
8improving customer service; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Charles Matthews is a member of several boards of
10directors, including the American Gas Association, the Chicago
11Urban League, the Economic Club of Chicago, the Illinois
12Utility Business Diversity Council, Navy Pier, Rush University
13Medical Center, Start Early, the United Way of Metro Chicago,
14and World Business Chicago; he also is active with Chicago
15United and the Commercial Club of Chicago, including its Civic
16Committee; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Charles Matthews will retire after more than 40
18years in the energy industry at the end of June 2022;
19therefore, be it
 
20    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
21HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
22we congratulate Charles Matthews on the occasion of his
23retirement and wish him the best in his future endeavors; and
