HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Everyone has an important role to play in
3increasing road safety; and
 
4    WHEREAS, More than 700 injury crashes involve distracted
5driving on an average day, and the economic toll of all motor
6vehicle crashes in the U.S. annually exceeds $400 billion; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Talking on a mobile phone, even in hands-free
8mode, texting, or programming your dashboard infotainment
9system or GPS device can divert your attention away from
10driving and result in physical or cognitive distraction; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Illinois residents and all Americans deserve to
12live in communities that promote safe driving behaviors and
13healthy lifestyles; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Preventing distracted driving injuries and deaths
15requires the cooperation of all levels of government,
16employers, and the general public; and
 
17    WHEREAS, The National Safety Council and the Iowa-Illinois
18Safety Council work to promote policies, practices, and
19procedures that lead to increased safety and protection and
20health in business and industry, in schools and colleges, on

1roads and highways, and in homes and communities; and
 
2    WHEREAS, In April of 2022, The National Safety Council and
3the Iowa-Illinois Safety Council are conducting a nationwide
4month-long distracted driving public education campaign; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Spring is a time when people begin to log more
6miles on the road, and it is imperative to focus attention on
7motor vehicle injury risks and preventions; therefore, be it
 
8    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
9HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
10we pledge our support for Distracted Driving Awareness Month
11in April 2022 and strongly urge the citizens and businesses of
12Illinois to observe Distracted Driving Awareness Month by
13practicing safe driving behaviors and pledging to drive
14distraction-free.
