HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to recognize Streator Unlimited, Inc. for
4the company's work with Illinois State University's School of
5Information Technology to develop a video game/phone app to
6assist people with epilepsy; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Streator Unlimited, Inc. began in 1965, and the
8nonprofit organization has a budget of $3 million and 61
9employees, making it one of the larger employers in Streator;
10and
 
11    WHEREAS, Streator Unlimited, Inc.'s mission is a
12commitment to enriching the lives of adults with disabilities
13by teaching skills that will enable them to reach their
14fullest potential, live as independently as possible, and
15become integrated into the community; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Streator Unlimited, Inc. practices its mission in
17a number of ways, including possessing five group homes to
18provide 32 adults with developmental disabilities with 24-hour
19support, providing paid work opportunities to adults with
20disabilities at its sheltered workshop, running an 8-unit
21apartment building for low-income adults with disabilities,
22assisting people with a great variety of disabilities find

1jobs in the community, and providing 70 adults with
2disabilities with day and vocational training with classes
3such as nutrition, digital photography, men's and women's
4clubs, sports, job skills, arts and crafts, basic academics,
5utilization of computers, and community outings; and
 
6    WHEREAS, From late 2019 through 2020, Streator Unlimited,
7Inc. collaborated with students from Illinois State
8University's School of Information Technology to develop a
9video game for people with epilepsy, as typical video games
10possess stimulation and rapid motion that can trigger
11seizures; the concept of this new video game was to create an
12video game experience for people who couldn't use typical
13video games and to offer a video game designed to reinforce
14positive self-care habits, including taking medication and
15making smart eating choices; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Streator Unlimited, Inc.'s game, which can be
17found at www.streatorunlimited.org/epilepsy, can offer
18services to a projected 28,000 children and adults with
19epilepsy in Central and Northwest Illinois through grants from
20the Illinois Department of Human Services; and
 
21    WHEREAS, Streator Unlimited, Inc.'s collaboration with the
22ISU School of Information Technology is an outstanding example
23of the organization's commitment of service to the people of

1Illinois; therefore, be it
 
2    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
3HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
4we recognize Streator Unlimited, Inc. for its collaborative
5work with Illinois State University's School of Information
6Technology, and we thank the organization for its continued
7commitment to serving people with disabilities; and be it
8further
 
9    RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
