HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to congratulate Madison County Chief
4Deputy Coroner Roger D. Smith on the occasion of his
5retirement on March 12, 2021, after 38 years in public
6service; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Roger Smith has had a long and distinguished
8career in public service; in addition to his work for the
9Madison County Coroner's Office, he has served as a police
10officer in Pontoon Beach, as a firefighter for the Long Lake
11Fire Department, and as an EMT with Laughlin Ambulance Service
12in Troy and Campbell's Ambulance Service; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Roger Smith became a volunteer deputy coroner in
141987 before becoming a full-time employee in 1989; in 2010, he
15was named Madison County Chief Deputy Coroner and in that role
16he had the privilege of working with a staff dedicated to
17serving their community and meeting the highest standards of
18their profession, with every investigator achieving
19accreditation from the American Board of Medicolegal Death
20Investigators; and
 
21    WHEREAS, Throughout his career, Roger Smith spent a lot of
22his time working on child death investigations and going to

1high schools to speak on the dangers of drinking and driving;
2and
 
3    WHEREAS, In addition to his regular duties, Roger Smith is
4also a former member of the St. Louis Major Case Squad and a
5founding member of the Illinois Child Death Review Team; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Roger Smith is currently an instructor and
7lecturer for the Illinois Coroners and Medical Examiners
8Association and the Southwestern Illinois Law Enforcement
9Commission; he conducts numerous trainings with fire
10department personnel and reserve deputy coroners and pre-prom
11presentations at area high schools; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Proving his dedication to local public service,
13Roger Smith currently serves as an executive board member of
14the St. Louis Area Regional Response System (STARRS) and is
15co-chairman of the Mass Fatality Committee; and
 
16    WHEREAS, After 38 years in public service, Roger Smith
17plans to continue to be active in disaster planning and as a
18volunteer deputy coroner in his retirement; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Roger Smith greatly enjoyed working in the
20Coroner's Office because he saw it as a way to be an advocate
21for the deceased and to help the survivors find answers during

1very dark, difficult times; therefore, be it
 
2    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
3HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
4we congratulate Roger D. Smith on his retirement and thank him
5for his many years of dedicated public service to the citizens
6of Madison County; and be it further
 
7    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
8presented to Mr. Roger D. Smith as an expression of our esteem
9and respect.
