HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, It is highly fitting that the Illinois General
3Assembly pays honor and respect to those individuals who have
4given their lives in service to their communities; and
 
5    WHEREAS, On October 4, 2021, DEA Special Agent Michael
6Gale "Mike" Garbo died while in the line of duty as a result of
7injuries sustained during a shooting in downtown Tucson,
8Arizona; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Special Agent Garbo was born in Grayville to
10Carol Ann (Young) Garbo and Larry Garbo on February 10, 1970;
11he graduated from Grayville High School in 1988 and Eastern
12Illinois University; he served with the U.S. Army National
13Guard; he resided in Sahuarita, Arizona at the time of his
14passing; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Special Agent Garbo was inspired by his late
16father, an Illinois State Police captain, and pursued a career
17in law enforcement; he was a former police officer for the
18Metro Nashville Police Department; he was currently serving as
19a special agent of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA)
20based in Tucson, Arizona, a position he held since 2005; with
21unmatched talent, knowledge, dignity, and bravery, he
22dedicated his life's work to combating drug traffickers,

1spanning from Kabul, Afghanistan to various locations across
2the United States; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Special Agent Garbo was a dedicated father and
4husband who devoted his life to serving and caring for others;
5he enjoyed practicing Jiu Jitsu and martial arts, spending
6time with his family, and watching his daughter succeed in
7every aspect of her life; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Special Agent Garbo was preceded in death by his
9parents and his special grandmother, Betty Garbo; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Special Agent Garbo is survived by his wife, Vida
11Mary Garbo; his daughter, Alexis Garbo; his niece and
12goddaughter, Kennedy Valinevicius; his brother, Terry Garbo;
13and many other loved ones; therefore, be it
 
14    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
15HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE
16SENATE CONCURRING HEREIN, that we designate the section of
17Interstate 64 between mile marker 128 and 132 as the "DEA
18Special Agent Michael Garbo Memorial Highway"; and be it
19further
 
20    RESOLVED, That the Illinois Department of Transportation
21is requested to erect at suitable locations, consistent with

1State and federal regulations, appropriate plaques or signs
2giving notice of the name "DEA Special Agent Michael Garbo
3Memorial Highway"; and be it further
 
4    RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
5presented to the family of Special Agent Garbo and the
6Secretary of Transportation.
