1    AN ACT concerning transportation.
 
2    Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3represented in the General Assembly:
 
4    Section 5. The Illinois Vehicle Code is amended by
5changing Section 3-682 as follows:
 
6    (625 ILCS 5/3-682)
7    Sec. 3-682. Illinois Police Association license plates.
8    (a) The Secretary, upon receipt of an application made in
9the form prescribed by the Secretary, may issue special
10registration plates designated as Illinois Police Association
11license plates. The special plates issued under this Section
12shall be affixed only to passenger vehicles of the first
13division and motor vehicles of the second division weighing
14not more than 8,000 pounds. Plates issued under this Section
15shall expire according to the multi-year procedure established
16by Section 3-414.1 of this Code.
17    (b) The design and color of the plates is wholly within the
18discretion of the Secretary. The Secretary may allow the
19plates to be issued as vanity plates or personalized under
20Section 3-405.1 of the Code. The Secretary shall prescribe
21stickers or decals as provided under Section 3-412 of this
22Code. The Secretary may, in his or her discretion, allow the
23plates to be issued as vanity or personalized plates in

1accordance with Section 3-405.1 of this Code.
2    (c) An applicant for the special plate shall be charged a
3$25 fee for original issuance in addition to the appropriate
4registration fee. Of this fee, $10 shall be deposited into the
5Illinois Police Association Fund and $15 shall be deposited
6into the Secretary of State Special License Plate Fund, to be
7used by the Secretary to help defray the administrative
8processing costs.
9    For each registration renewal period, a $25 fee, in
10addition to the appropriate registration fee, shall be
11charged. Of this fee, $23 shall be deposited into the Illinois
12Police Association Fund and $2 shall be deposited into the
13Secretary of State Special License Plate Fund.
14    (d) The Illinois Police Association Fund is created as a
15special fund in the State treasury. All money in the Illinois
16Police Association Fund shall be used, subject to
17appropriation, for providing death benefits for the families
18of police officers killed in the line of duty or the families
19of members of the Illinois Police Association dying of natural
20causes, and for providing scholarships, for graduate study,
21undergraduate study, or both, to children and spouses of
22police officers killed in the line of duty or to children and
23spouses of members of the Illinois Police Association dying of
24natural causes.
