SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:
 
20 ILCS 2605/2605-203 new

    Amends the Department of State Police Law of the Civil Administrative Code of Illinois. Provides that the Illinois State Police may appoint investigators to collect and preserve physical evidence, forensic art, forensic mapping, photography, sketches of crime scenes, diagrams and animations of crash and crime scenes, and any other related duties imposed under law administered by the Illinois State Police. Provides that the Director of the Illinois State Police may authorize each investigator employed and any other employee of the Illinois State Police exercising the powers of a peace officer a distinct badge that, on its face that: (1) clearly states that the badge is authorized by the Illinois State Police; (2) indicates his or her position of crime scene investigator; and (3) contains a unique identifying number. Makes other changes.

1    AN ACT concerning the Illinois State Police.
 
2    Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3represented in the General Assembly:
 
4    Section 5. The Department of State Police Law of the Civil
5Administrative Code of Illinois is amended by adding Section
62605-203 as follows:
 
7    (20 ILCS 2605/2605-203 new)
8    Sec. 2605-203. Crime scene investigators.
9    (a) The Illinois State Police may appoint investigators to
10collect and preserve physical evidence, forensic art, forensic
11mapping, photography, sketches of crime scenes, diagrams and
12animations of crash and crime scenes, and any other related
13duties imposed under law administered by the Illinois State
14Police.
15    (b) These investigators may exercise all the powers of
16peace officers for the purpose of crime scene investigation.
17    (c) These investigators shall attend a firearm course
18approved by the Illinois State Police.
19    (d) The Director may authorize each investigator employed
20under this Section and any other employee of the Illinois
21State Police exercising the powers of a peace officer a
22distinct badge that, on its face:
23        (1) clearly states that the badge is authorized by the

1    Illinois State Police;
2        (2) indicates his or her position of crime scene
3    investigator; and
4        (3) contains a unique identifying number.
5    (e) The Illinois State Police may issue crime scene
6investigators a distinct uniform and dress code, which clearly
7distinguishes their position, separate from uniforms issued to
8State Police officers.
