SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Sheldon Liebman, who passed away on
4September 15, 2020 at the age of 79; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Sheldon Liebman was born to Abe and Sadie Liebman
6in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on November 17, 1940; he attended
7the Wharton School where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in
8Economics; he later received a Ph.D in American Literature from
9the University of Pennsylvania; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Sheldon Liebman was a student of Judaism and the
11Bible; he authored two books, one on Christianity and one on
12Judaism; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Sheldon Liebman authored 35 articles on American
14Literature and was a university professor for 57 years,
15teaching literature, philosophy, grammar, writing, and
16humanities; most recently, he served as chair of the Humanities
17Department at Wilbur Wright College until his retirement in
182017; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Sheldon Liebman served for eight years as a member
20of the Oak Park Elementary School Board and for five years on
21the Hemingway Foundation Board; he was a member of the Walter

1Mitty Jazz Band, the Pennies From Heaven Trio, and the American
2Library Association; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Sheldon Liebman had a sharp sense of humor that
4was matched only by his brilliant mind, his humble way of
5living, and his love for his faith; of all of his
6accomplishments, he said he was most proud of having built a
7summer home in Upstate New York with just a hammer and handsaw;
8he was an activist, a humanitarian, and an advocate for
9equality and justice; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Sheldon Liebman is survived by his beloved partner
11of 30 years, Gail; his children, Sarah (Brian) and Rebecca; his
12former spouse and the mother of his children, Gale; his
13grandchildren, Charlotte, Markus, and Micah; his sister,
14Dianne (Allan); his brother, Marc (Patricia); his nieces,
15Pamela, Stephanie, and Caroline; and his nephews, Ari, David,
16Lionel, Simian, Zachary, and Andy; therefore, be it
 
17    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL
18ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
19Sheldon Liebman, and extend our sincere condolences to his
20family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
21further
 
22    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
