SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate recognize that
3the sequencing of the human genome is one of the most
4significant scientific accomplishments of the past hundred
5years and expresses support for genetic counselors, who are
6using this research to improve the lives of many throughout the
7State; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Genetic counselors empower patients and their
9families with vital healthcare information, guidance, and
10emotional support to help them understand their family history,
11evaluate genetic testing options, and make informed choices
12based on test results; and
 
13    WHEREAS, There are over 150 certified genetic counselors in
14Illinois working in prenatal, fertility, pediatrics,
15metabolic, cardiovascular, neurology, and cancer care; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Many people benefit from increased genetic
17sequencing research and genetic counseling, including anyone
18with a condition linked to a specific gene or anyone who has a
19family history of an inherited disease; and
 
20    WHEREAS, The 5,000 genetic counselors across the country
21streamline the healthcare industry by ensuring the right tests

1are being ordered, avoiding costly and unnecessary costs and
2tests, by helping patients and providers understand complex
3test results and how to best use this information, by helping
4consult with potential parents on the intimidating potential of
5passing on inherited diseases, by sharing information with
6family members, and by providing recommendations for community
7support services; therefore, be it
 
8    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL
9ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we declare November 14,
102019 as "Genetic Counselor Awareness Day" in the State of
11Illinois.
