SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Every day, 100 Americans are killed by gun
3violence and countless others are wounded; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Americans are 25 times more likely to be killed
5with guns than people in other high-income countries; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Protecting public safety in the communities they
7serve is among a legislator's highest responsibilities; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Support for the Second Amendment rights of
9law-abiding citizens goes hand-in-hand with keeping guns away
10from people that should not have them; and
 
11    WHEREAS, June 2019 would have marked the 22nd birthday of
12Hadiya Pendleton, a teenager who marched in President Obama's
13second inaugural parade and was tragically shot and killed just
14weeks later; and
 
15    WHEREAS, To help honor Hadiya and the 100 Americans whose
16lives are cut short and the countless others who are wounded by
17gun violence every day, June 7, 2019 has been designated as the
185th National Gun Violence Awareness Day; and
 
19    WHEREAS, The idea was inspired by a group of Hadiya's

1friends who asked their classmates to commemorate her life by
2wearing orange; they chose this color because hunters wear
3orange to protect themselves and others, and orange is a color
4that has been embraced by the gun safety movement because it
5symbolizes the value of human life; and
 
6    WHEREAS, By wearing orange and commemorating National Gun
7Violence Awareness Day on June 7, Americans will raise
8awareness about gun violence and honor the lives and lost human
9potential of Americans stolen by gun violence; therefore, be it
 
10    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL
11ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we declare June 7, 2019
12as Gun Violence Awareness Day in the State of Illinois and
13encourage all citizens to support their communities' efforts to
14prevent the tragic effects of gun violence and to honor and
15value human lives; and be it further
 
16    RESOLVED, That we renew our commitment to reduce gun
17violence and pledge to do all we can to keep firearms out of
18the wrong hands and encourage responsibility in gun ownership
19to keep our children safe.
