SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Herbert Curlee Harris D.D.S., who passed
4away on March 29, 2019; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Dr. Harris was born in Tucker, Arkansas to Lillie
6Maud Tucker Harris and Emanuel Mason Harris on February 4,
71928; he attended Arkansas AM&N College (University of Arkansas
8at Pine Bluff) and served in the U.S. Armed Forces during the
9Korean War; he continued his studies at Meharry Medical College
10in Nashville, Tennessee, where he earned a Doctorate of Dental
11Surgery in 1959; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Dr. Harris completed an internship in oral surgery
13at Harlem Hospital in New York City and received his
14professional diploma in 1960; he earned a Master of Public
15Health in 1976 from the University of Illinois at Chicago; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Dr. Harris operated a successful dental practice
17in Chicago for over 30 years; he was also the proprietor of the
18Chatham Avalon Health Center, one of the largest Black-owned
19medical centers in Chicago; he made real estate investments in
20Chicago and Freeport, Bahamas; he was the founder and CEO of
21the former Daniel Hale Williams Health Center and president of
22the Lincoln Dental Society; he was on the board of trustees and

1president of the National Alumni Association for Meharry
2Medical College; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Dr. Harris was a lifetime member of the National
4NAACP; he was listed in Who's Who in America and received the
5University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UNPB) Legacy Award in
62017; he has received numerous honors and awards over the years
7for his generous contributions of both time and money to his
8undergraduate alma mater, UAPB, Meharry Medical College, and to
9the Chicagoland community at large; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Dr. Harris's memberships included the Alpha Phi
11Alpha Fraternity, the Lambs Club, the Original Forty Club, The
12National Dental Association, and The American Public Health
13Association; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Dr. Harris was preceded in death by his parents;
15and
 
16    WHEREAS, Dr. Harris is survived by his wife of 60 years,
17Mildred, and numerous nieces, nephews, family members, and
18friends; therefore, be it
 
19    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL
20ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
21Herbert Curlee Harris D.D.S. and extend our sincere condolences

1to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be
2it further
 
3    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
4presented to the family of Dr. Harris as an expression of our
5deepest sympathy.
