SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The executive board of the World Health
3Organization designated the year 2020 as "Year of the Nurse and
4Midwife" in conjunction with the 200th birthday of Florence
5Nightingale; and
 
6    WHEREAS, The World Health Organization is urging world
7leaders to make investments in nursing and to pave the way for
8a brighter future for health around the world; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Nurses and nurse midwives have a critical role in
10health promotion, disease prevention, and the delivery of care
11in all settings; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Illinois has 185,992 registered nurses living and
13working in the State, of which 13,746 are also licensed as
14advanced practice registered nurses, and 24,763 licensed
15practical nurses, making nursing the largest licensed health
16care profession; and
 
17    WHEREAS, There are over 525 active certified
18nurse-midwives (CNMs) licensed through the Illinois State
19Board of Nursing; and
 
20    WHEREAS, There are 129 schools of nursing in Illinois; and

1    WHEREAS, The care provided by nurses in Illinois is the
2primary component to a successful health care delivery system;
3and
 
4    WHEREAS, Since 2015, nurse researchers in Illinois have
5been awarded funding from the National Institute of Nursing
6Research in excess of $27 million, to provide the
7evidence-based findings to improve health for individuals,
8families, and communities; and
 
9    WHEREAS, CNMs are primary care providers throughout a
10woman's life span, promoting the health and well-being of
11newborns and women, and care for families and communities
12during a time of an obstetric workforce shortage in the
13country; therefore, be it
 
14    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL
15ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
16CONCURRING HEREIN, that we declare 2020 as the "Year of the
17Nurse and Midwife" in the State of Illinois; and be it further
 
18    RESOLVED, That we recognize the vital role of nurses and
19nurse midwives in promoting and providing health care to the
20residents of Illinois and the importance of investment in
21nursing education and research to develop a sufficient and
