HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, By law, the U.S. government is required to count
3the number of people living in the United States every ten
4years; engaging the participation of all individuals in order
5to get an accurate count is of crucial importance because
6census numbers impact all individuals and all organizations in
7the United States in many ways; and
 
8    WHEREAS, The federal government uses census numbers to
9allocate more than $675 billion in federal funds annually for
10community programs and services, such as education programs,
11housing and community development, health care services,
12grants, and a variety of special projects; and
 
13    WHEREAS, The census also plays a vital role in our nation's
14system of government by determining how many representatives
15will be sent to Congress from each state to convey our concerns
16and work towards a better future; the information is then used
17by lawmakers to prioritize allocations to the communities
18schools, hospitals, and infrastructures in the most need; and
 
19    WHEREAS, State, local, and tribal governments use census
20information for planning and allocating funds for new schools,
21libraries, public transportation systems, new roads and
22bridges, and for help in determining zoning locations for

1police, fire, and other first responders; and
 
2    WHEREAS, Communities and small businesses use census
3information to develop social service programs, community
4action, and outreach projects; census numbers help determine
5where to locate factories, shopping centers, movie theaters,
6banks, and offices, which all have the potential to lead to new
7jobs; therefore, be it
 
8    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
9HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
10we recognize the importance of prioritizing census
11participation and urge state agencies to post clear and easy to
12access information regarding census procedures in English and
13Spanish so that all individuals have an equal opportunity for
14civic duty engagement; and be it further
 
15    RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
16delivered to the Governor's Office and all members of the
17Illinois General Assembly.
