HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Under the leadership of A. Philip Randolph, the
3Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters (BSCP) was the first Black
4union in America to win a collective bargaining agreement with
5a major U.S. corporation and to be chartered under the American
6Federation of Labor; and
 
7    WHEREAS, In 1941, A. Philip Randolph successfully
8organized a call for mass protests to fight discrimination
9against blacks in wartime jobs; that protest was called off
10after President Franklin Roosevelt issued an Executive Order
11banning all discriminatory practices; another threatened
12protest caused President Harry Truman to issue an Executive
13Order abolishing the practice of segregation in the U.S. Armed
14Forces; and
 
15    WHEREAS, The ensuing successes led A. Philip Randolph to
16organize the 1963 March on Washington, D.C., where Dr. Martin
17Luther King Jr. delivered his "I Have a Dream" speech; and
 
18    WHEREAS, The A. Philip Randolph Pullman Porter Museum was
19founded in 1995 by Dr. Lyn Hughes; the museum is a self-funded
20African American labor history museum located in the Historic
21Pullman District and is the only cultural institution in the
22nation that showcases the history of the African American labor

1union movement, the BSCP, and A. Philip Randolph; and
 
2    WHEREAS, The A. Philip Randolph Pullman Porter Museum
3proudly celebrates and honors its namesake's lifelong
4leadership in securing employment for all Americans, as well as
5his momentous work to end discrimination and secure employment
6opportunities for African Americans in organized labor; and
 
7    WHEREAS, The accomplishments of the BSCP and its founder,
8A. Philip Randolph, opened the doors to organized labor for
9African Americans and created a vehicle through which many
10Civil Rights activities were begun; therefore, be it
 
11    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
12HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
13we commemorate the 94th anniversary of the Brotherhood of
14Sleeping Car Porters (BSCP) and commend the accomplishments of
15the A. Philip Randolph Pullman Porter Museum; we wish the
16museum continued success in preserving and protecting the
17history of A. Philip Randolph, the Pullman Porters, the African
18American Labor Movement, and the Pullman District; and be it
19further
 
20    RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
21presented to David A. Peterson, President of the A. Philip
22Randolph Pullman Porter Museum, and to Dr. Lyn Hughes, Founder
