HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Kenneth
4Leo Harris of Chicago, who passed away on February 17, 2019;
5and
 
6    WHEREAS, Kenneth Harris was born to James and Nettie Harris
7and raised on the South Side of Chicago during the Great
8Depression; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Kenneth Harris attended Sherwood Elementary
10School and later enrolled in Tilden Technical High School,
11where he studied engineering and graduated in 1947; and
 
12    WHEREAS, While attending Tilden High School, Kenneth
13Harris was often forced to defend himself or sprint home to
14avoid fights during those blatantly segregated times; the
15experience paved the way for him to earn a track scholarship to
16Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa; and
 
17    WHEREAS, In 1953, Kenneth Harris enlisted in the United
18States Army and served in the Korean War; he was stationed in
19Japan until his honorable discharge in 1955; and
 
20    WHEREAS, Kenneth Harris returned to Chicago, married the

1love of his life, Delores Murphy, and raised three children,
2Freddrenna M. Lyle, Katinka L. Harris-Spurlin, and Michael
3Kenneth Harris Sr.; therefore, be it
 
4    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
5HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
6we mourn the passing of Kenneth Leo Harris and extend our
7sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew
8and loved him; and be it further
 
9    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
10presented to the family of Kenneth Harris as an expression of
11our deepest sympathy.
