HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Boys and Girls Clubs of America is a national
3organization of local chapters which provide after-school
4programs for young people; and
 
5    WHEREAS, The first Boys' Club was founded in 1860 in
6Hartford, Connecticut by three women, Elizabeth Hamersley,
7Mary Goodwin, and Alice Goodwin, who believed that boys who
8roamed the streets should have a positive alternative focusing
9on character development; and
 
10    WHEREAS, In 1906, 53 independent Boys' Clubs came together
11in Boston to form a national organization; the organization
12changed its name in 1990 to Boys and Girls Clubs of America to
13recognize the fact that girls are a part of the cause; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Boys and Girls Clubs of America has grown to
15include over 4,000 autonomous clubs in all 50 states as well as
16Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and U.S. military bases;
17together, these local clubs serve four million boys and girls
18each year, and the organization employs over 50,000 staff
19members; and
 
20    WHEREAS, One of those local clubs, the Boys and Girls Club
21of Livingston County, was formed in January of 2018 when the

1separate clubs in Pontiac and Fairbury joined forces, giving
2members the opportunity to attend club functions in both
3locations; and
 
4    WHEREAS, The Boys and Girls Club of Livingston County seeks
5to enable all young people, especially those in great need, to
6reach their potential as productive, caring, and responsible
7citizens; and
 
8    WHEREAS, The Boys and Girls Club of Livingston County
9accomplishes this through after-school programs featuring
10sports, games, volunteer opportunities, goal setting, and
11leadership training, all under the care of trained staff
12members; therefore, be it
 
13    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
14HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
15we commend the positive work being done by the Boys and Girls
16Club of Livingston County, as well as the national
17organization, and we join them in celebrating national Boys and
18Girls Club Week, April 8-12; and be it further
 
19    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
20presented to the director of the Boys and Girls Club of
21Livingston County as a symbol of our respect and esteem.
