HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, It is appropriate to remember the many sacrifices
3and contributions to the cause of freedom made by the
4outstanding men and women who served in the United States Armed
5Forces; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Lt. Col. Stein was born in Des Moines, Iowa to Jay
7and Hazel (Fick) Stein on July 8, 1963; he married Barbara
8Nelson in Macomb on July 9, 1983; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Lt. Col. Stein grew up in the Macomb area and
10moved away in 1983; he graduated from the Rochester Institute
11of Technology in 1985; he received his master's degree from the
12University of Maryland; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Lt. Col. Stein was commissioned into the United
14States Army and transferred to the United States Air Force;
15during his military career, he flew 3,901 hours; he volunteered
16for the rescue mission he was flying when he was killed in
17Afghanistan on March 23, 2003; and
 
18    WHEREAS, During his military career, Lt. Col. Stein
19received a Meritorious Service Medal, an Air Medal, an Aerial
20Achievement Medal, an Air Force Commendation Medal, an Army
21Commendation Medal, and an Army Achievement Medal; and

1    WHEREAS, Lt. Col. Stein's passing has been deeply felt by
2many, especially his wife, Barbara Nelson Stein; his father,
3Jay W. Stein; his mother, Hazel Henry; his two sons, Doug and
4Tim Stein; his daughter, Erin Stein Jones; his sisters, Holly
5Stein, Navida (James McLaughlin) Stein, and April Stein; his
6six nieces; and his two nephews; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Lt. Col. Stein was preceded in death by his
8grandparents; therefore, be it
 
9    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
10HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE
11SENATE CONCURRING HEREIN, that we designate the portion of Old
12Highway 136 from E. 950th St. to E. 750th St. between Macomb
13and Colchester as the "Lt. Col. John Stein Memorial Highway";
14and be it further
 
15    RESOLVED, That the Illinois Department of Transportation
16is requested to erect at suitable locations, consistent with
17State and federal regulations, appropriate plaques or signs
18giving notice of the name of "Lt. Col. John Stein Memorial
19Highway"; and be it further
 
20    RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
21presented to the Secretary of Transportation and the family of
