HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, It is important to remember and honor the service
3of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice in the defense of the
4United States of America; and
 
5    WHEREAS, It is long overdue that we recognize, honor, and
6remember the sacrifices of those who served and died in the
7Vietnam War; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Glenard Jay Gregory was born in Shipman, Illinois
9to J.W. and Velda Lorene (Manahan) Gregory on February 27,
101949; he enlisted in the United States Army on November 28,
111967; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Glenard Jay Gregory served as a Field artillery
13Basic with Battery A of the 1st Battalion, 27th Artillery, 23rd
14Artillery Group, II Field Force; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Sgt. Gregory started his tour of Vietnam on May 6,
161968; he was injured on April 19, 1969 and passed away on April
1720, 1969, tragically dying at the age of 20, just days before
18he was scheduled to return home; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Sgt. Gregory was awarded the Vietnam Campaign
20Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the National Defense Medal,

1the Purple Heart Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the Expert
2Sharpshooter Medal, and the Bronze Star with "V" Decoration;
3and
 
4    WHEREAS, Sgt. Gregory is buried in the Shipman Cemetery in
5Macoupin County; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Sgt. Gregory is honored on Panel 26w, Line 15 of
7the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C.; therefore, be it
 
8    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
9HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE
10SENATE CONCURRING HEREIN, that we designate Route 16 in
11Shipman, Illinois as the "Sgt. Glenard Jay Gregory Memorial
12Road"; and be it further
 
13    RESOLVED, That the Illinois Department of Transportation
14is requested to erect at suitable locations, consistent with
15State and federal regulations, appropriate plaques or signs
16giving notice of the name "Sgt. Glenard Jay Memorial Road"; and
17be it further
 
18    RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
19presented to the family of Sgt. Glenard Jay Gregory, the
20Village of Shipman, and the Secretary of Transportation.
