SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Terry W. Cole Sr. of Champaign, who
4passed away on August 26, 2018; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Terry Cole was born in St. Louis to James P. Sr.
6and Mae Helen Young Cole on January 24, 1947; he was active in
7a number of sports at East St. Louis Senior High School,
8including football and track & field; he won awards in high
9jump and became an outstanding football player; he was the
10first black quarterback for the East St. Louis Flyers; while
11growing up, he was an active Boys Club member; he married Elyne
12Johnson in East St. Louis on August 24, 1969; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Terry Cole received a scholarship to North
14Carolina College in Durham; he moved to Champaign in 1969 and
15transferred to the University of Illinois, where he graduated
16with an undergraduate degree in recreation and park
17administration and a master's degree in sports management; he
18was active in the Don Moyer Boys and Girls Club, first as a
19volunteer for his college coursework and then as an employee;
20he remained an involved and loyal supporter of the organization
21for 50 years; and
 
22    WHEREAS, Terry Cole began his career at the University of

1Illinois as an Assistant Director for the Division of Campus
2Recreation in 1976; in 1979, he joined the Division of
3Intercollegiate Athletics, where he served as Academic
4Counselor, Director of Academic Services, Assistant Director
5of Academic Affairs, Senior Associate Director, and Interim
6Director of Athletics; he retired from the Division of
7Intercollegiate Athletics in August of 2011; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Terry Cole was inducted as an honorary member of
9the Varsity "I" Association in 2010, the highest honor awarded
10by the board of directors on behalf of the Division of
11Intercollegiate Athletics; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Terry Cole enjoyed golf, University of Illinois
13athletics, spending time with his grandchildren, and fishing;
14and
 
15    WHEREAS, Terry Cole was preceded in death by his parents;
16his sister, Donna Lee Flowers; and his brother, James Cole II;
17and
 
18    WHEREAS, Terry Cole is survived by his wife, Elyne; his
19son, Terry W. (Stacey) Cole Jr.; his daughter, Dr. Terrilyne
20Cole; his grandchildren, Kody LaBrecque, Jazzmine Cole, Terry
21W. Cole III, Adam Byrd, and baby girl Cole; his special nephew,
22Rodrick Flowers; his brothers, Terrell Cole Sr. and Bobby

1(Debra) Cole; his brothers-in-law, Wilbur (Donna) Flowers and
2James (Yvette) Johnson; his sisters-in-law, Jameatris Mitchum
3and Letitia (Darryl) Johnson Cross; his uncle, Clifford Harper;
4his aunt, Delois Hill; and numerous nieces, nephews, and
5cousins; therefore, be it
 
6    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL
7ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
8Terry W. Cole Sr., and extend our sincere condolences to his
9family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
10further
 
11    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
12presented to the family of Terry Cole as an expression of our
13deepest sympathy.
