SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Grady Myers Chronister of Springfield,
4who passed away on September 14, 2018; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Grady Chronister was born in Henryetta, Oklahoma
6to Hugh Grady and Alice Myers Chronister on November 22, 1938;
7he graduated from Oklahoma State University; he was a Captain
8in the United States Army and retired from the Army Reserves;
9and
 
10    WHEREAS, Grady Chronister's career included retail
11marketing, national wholesale fuel distribution, and oil
12trading on the New York Stock Exchange; he was an entrepreneur
13in the oil industry for 51 years; he began Chronister Oil with
14Derby Super Gas stores and was a major sponsor of the cardinals
15farm team; he secured the first self-serve permit in the State
16of Illinois; he sold the Super Gas chain to Marathon Oil in
171978; he then built another chain, Future Gas, in several
18Midwestern states outside of Illinois; in 1980, he opened the
19first convenience store, Quik-n-EZ, in the State, with
20locations in Springfield and other central Illinois towns; and
 
21    WHEREAS, Grady Chronister was an Eagle Scout, an elder in
22the Westminster Presbyterian Church, a former president of the

1Illini Country Club, and a former president and trustee of the
2Springfield YMCA; he was also a trustee of the Abraham Lincoln
3Boy Scouts Council, a supporter of UIS athletics, the arts, and
4the Illinois Symphony Orchestra; he contributed to many local
5and statewide non-profit organizations and was a strong
6supporter of youth programs throughout the area; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Grady Chronister was a competitive golfer and
8duplicate bridge player; he was a compassionate and generous
9father, husband, and friend and enjoyed spending time with his
10wife, children, and grandchildren; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Grady Chronister was preceded in death by his
12parents; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Grady Chronister is survived by his wife, Linda
14Longworth Chronister; his daughters, Wendy (Pete Rogers)
15Chronister, Julie (Mark Myers) Chronister, and Amy (John)
16Ridley; and his grandchildren, Caroline and Carter Rogers,
17Wyatt Myers, and Emma and Grady Ridley; therefore, be it
 
18    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL
19ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
20Grady Myers Chronister and extend our sincere condolences to
21his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
