SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the deaths of Edward and Ernestine Nedza, who passed
4away on January 24, 2018 and February 6, 2018; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Edward Nedza, who as an Illinois State Senator,
6Chicago 31st Ward Democratic Committeeman, and U.S. Navy
7Veteran, dedicated many years of his life to serving his city,
8state, and country; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Edward Nedza was born to Polish immigrants on July
1026, 1927 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy at the age of 17; he was
11a Corpsman attached to a Marine Corps unit and reached the rank
12of Petty Officer 1st Class; he served in the Philippines,
13Guiuan Eastern Samar, and Okinawa; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Upon returning to Chicago from his military
15service, Edward Nedza began a small business delivering butter,
16cheese, and eggs to customers in his neighborhood; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Edward Nedza continued his public service in
18various roles in city government, including years as 31st Ward
19Democratic Committeeman and eventually becoming first deputy
20commissioner of the Department of Aviation under Mayor Michael
21Bilandic; and

1    WHEREAS, Edward Nedza served Illinois as a State Senator in
2the 19th District from 1979 to 1987; his legislative
3accomplishments in Springfield included creating a state
4advisory council to increase graduation rates at public
5schools, improving the fairness of assessment tests for
6Hispanic students, strengthening gun laws prohibiting the sale
7of firearms to minors, enhancing protections of restricted
8areas at airports, and designating the first Monday in March as
9a state holiday in honor of Casimir Pulaski's birthday; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Edward Nedza married his beloved wife, Ernestine
11"Tina" Nedza on February 19, 1955 and they raised two children,
12Jim and Kathy; together, they enjoyed nearly 63 years of
13marriage, friendship, and many games of gin rummy; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Edward Nedza is survived by his children, Jim
15(Mitch) Nedza and Kathy (Steve} Buhe; his cherished
16grandchildren, Elizabeth (Ross) Buhe and Jonathan (Cristina)
17Buhe; his great-granddaughter, Isabella Buhe; many nieces and
18nephews; and his extended family of friends; therefore, be it
 
19    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL
20ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
21Edward and Ernestine Nedza, and extend our sincere condolences
22to their family, friends, and all who knew and loved them; and
