SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Kieran J. Phelan Jr. of Oak Park, who
4passed away on August 4, 2017, at the age of 82; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Kieran Phelan, affectionately known as "K.J.",
6was born in Oak Park to Kieran and Loretta (McMonigle) Phelan
7on March 7, 1935 and was a lifelong resident of Oak Park and
8River Forest; he attended St. Giles Grade School and graduated
9from Fenwick High School in 1953; he graduated from the
10University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana in 1957, where
11he returned for reunions and which always held a special place
12in his heart; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Kieran Phelan served honorably as a lieutenant in
14the United States Navy on the U.S.S. Valcour; he continued
15working for the government with the Central Intelligence Agency
16in Washington, D.C., a testament to both his civic pride and
17his broad skill set; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Kieran Phelan returned to Oak Park and took over
19the family business, the Reliable Credit Company, of which he
20later became the owner; and
 
21    WHEREAS, Kieran Phelan retired after a rich and colorful

1career life in private and government employment, and enjoyed
2spending his time with his lifelong love, Mary Catherine Phelan
3and their children and grandchildren, as well as friends who
4saw "K.J." to be a man with a sharp wit and a broad heart with a
5passionate zeal for life; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Kieran Phelan was preceded in passing by his
7parents and his brother, Robert McCarthy; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Kieran Phelan is survived by his wife, Mary
9Catherine Phelan; his children, Kieran III (Jacqueline), John
10(Amy), Martin (Leann), Daniel (Beth), and Molly (John) Griffin;
11his grandchildren, John, Anne, Kieran IV, Samantha, Katie, Ben,
12Molly, Joseph, George, Jack, Sarah, Jimmy, Daniel, Michael,
13Lizzie, and Hannah; and the many family members and friends he
14touched throughout his long and full life; therefore, be it
 
15    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL
16ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
17Kieran J. Phelan Jr., and extend our sincere condolences to his
18family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
19further
 
20    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
21presented to the family of Kieran Phelan as an expression of
22our deepest sympathy.
