SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, It is highly fitting that the Illinois General
3Assembly pays honor and respect to the truly great individuals
4who served our country and in doing so have gone above and
5beyond the call of duty to take part in truly heroic tasks; and
 
6    WHEREAS, United States Marine Corps Lance Corporal Alec
7Catherwood was born May 6, 1991 in Heilbronn, Germany; his
8parents were Kirk and Gretchen Catherwood; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Lance Cpl. Alec Catherwood was a 2009 graduate of
10Byron High School and a member of the Future Farmers of America
11as a sentry; he was also a Boy Scout and had a black belt in Tae
12Kwon Do; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Lance Cpl. Alec Catherwood enjoyed athletics,
14four-wheeling, mudding in his truck, shooting his shotgun, and
15spending time with his family, his fiancee, and his friends;
16and
 
17    WHEREAS, Lance Cpl. Alec Catherwood was assigned to the 3rd
18Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division of the I
19Marine Expeditionary Force in Camp Pendleton, California; he
20passed away on October 14, 2010 while conducting combat
21operations in Helmand Province, Afghanistan; and

1    WHEREAS, Lance Cpl. Alec Catherwood earned many personal
2service awards, including the Purple Heart, Combat Action
3Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism
4Service Medal, and Korean Defense Service Medal; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Lance Cpl. Alec Catherwood is survived by his
6parents; his sister, Mikaela (Lance Cpl. Matthew, USMC)
7Montgomery; his fiancee, Hailey Patrick; his maternal
8grandparents, Donald and Mary Ernst; and many aunts, uncles,
9and cousins; therefore, be it
 
10    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL
11ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
12CONCURRING HEREIN, that we designate the portion of Illinois
13Route 72 from the south side of the bridge in Byron to the
14Ogle/DeKalb County line as Lance Cpl. Alec E. Catherwood
15Memorial Road in honor of Lance Corporal Alec Catherwood and
16his service to our nation; and be it further
 
17    RESOLVED, That the Illinois Department of Transportation
18is requested to erect at suitable locations, consistent with
19State and federal regulations, appropriate plaques or signs
20giving notice of the name of Lance Cpl. Alec E. Catherwood
21Memorial Road; and be it further

1    RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
2delivered to the Secretary of the Illinois Department of
3Transportation and the family of Lance Cpl. Alec Catherwood.
