SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:
 
225 ILCS 85/25.20

    Amends the Pharmacy Practice Act. Provides that, beginning on January 1, 2022, all prescriptions orders for drugs or medical devices must be electronically transmitted to the patient's pharmacy of choice. Requires the Department of Financial and Professional Regulation to adopt rules governing the use of electronically transmitted prescription orders.

1    AN ACT concerning regulation.
 
2    Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3represented in the General Assembly:
 
4    Section 5. The Pharmacy Practice Act is amended by changing
5Section 25.20 as follows:
 
6    (225 ILCS 85/25.20)
7    (Section scheduled to be repealed on January 1, 2018)
8    Sec. 25.20. Electronic visual image prescriptions. If a
9pharmacy's computer system can capture an unalterable
10electronic visual image of the prescription drug order, the
11electronic image shall constitute the original prescription
12and a hard copy of the prescription drug order is not required.
13The computer system must be capable of maintaining, printing,
14and providing, upon a request by the Department, the
15Department's compliance officers, and other authorized agents,
16all of the prescription information required by State law and
17regulations of the Department within 72 hours of the request.
18    Beginning on January 1, 2022, all prescriptions orders for
19drugs or medical devices, as defined in this Act, must be
20electronically transmitted to the patient's pharmacy of
21choice. The Department shall adopt rules governing the use of
22electronically transmitted prescription orders.
