HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Sen. John McCain is a true American hero who has
3dedicated his life to public service, serving in the United
4States Navy as an aviator from 1958 to 1981, as Congressman of
5Arizona's 1st District from 1983 to 1987, and in the U.S.
6Senate since 1987; and
 
7    WHEREAS, During the Vietnam War, Sen. McCain was seriously
8injured and captured and held as a prisoner of war for six
9years, where he was tortured and sustained injuries resulting
10in lifelong physical disabilities; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Sen. McCain was diagnosed with an aggressive form
12of brain cancer in 2017 and has been receiving treatment at
13home in Arizona; and
 
14    WHEREAS, On May 10, 2018, Special Assistant of the White
15House Communications Office, Kelly Riddell Sadler, mocked Sen.
16John McCain's diagnosis of brain cancer; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Kelly Riddell Sadler dismissed Sen. McCain's
18opinion on President Trump's nominee for CIA director, stating
19"[His opinion] doesn't matter. He's dying anyway"; and
 
20    WHEREAS, Common human decency calls for reverence and

1respect for members of the armed forces, seniors, and
2individuals with serious health concerns; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Several Senate Republicans have called for an
4apology from the Trump administration, including Sen. Lindsey
5Graham, Sen. John Cornyn, Sen. John Kennedy, and Sen. Dan
6Sullivan; and
 
7    WHEREAS, The Trump administration has refused to
8acknowledge or apologize for the degrading remarks made by its
9Special Assistant; and
 
10    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
11Representatives condemn recent disrespectful comments made by
12White House Communications Office Special Assistant, Kelly
13Riddell Sadler concerning Sen. John McCain; and
 
14    WHEREAS, It is in the poorest of taste for an employee of
15the highest office in the country to disrespect and disparage
16disabled veterans of the armed forces; therefore, be it
 
17    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
18HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
19strongly urge the President of the United States to issue a
20formal apology to Sen. John McCain and to remove Special
21Assistant Kelly Riddell Sadler from her position within the

1White House communications office and from any other government
2related duties; and be it further
 
3    RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
4presented to President Trump, his Chief of Staff, John F.
5Kelly, and Kelly Riddell Sadler as a symbol of our disapproval
6of any disrespect toward veterans or the armed forces,
7especially, the vile, shameful comments made by Kelly Riddell
8Sadler.
