HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Kenneth
4Dion Hutchinson of Chicago, who passed away on October 18,
52017; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Kenneth Hutchinson was born in Chicago to Leslie
7and Kenneth Hutchinson on December 26, 1981; he attended
8Goodlow Elementary School and Lindblom College Preparatory
9High School, where he was involved in many activities,
10including wrestling, Senior Brother's Council, and was
11President of the National Honor Society; he and his future
12wife, LaSandra, attended high school together, founded the
13Student Action Committee, and attended Northwestern University
14together; they were married on June 5, 2004; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Kenneth Hutchinson graduated from Northwestern
16University with a degree in social policy and studied abroad in
17Ghana, West Africa; he co-directed Northwestern's gospel choir
18and the Northwestern Community Ensemble; he worked as a
19work-study student in Northwestern's undergraduate admissions
20which allowed him the opportunity to continue in undergraduate
21admissions as the Assistant Director and Co-Coordinator of
22African American Recruitment after graduation; he grew
23passionate about increasing college access for students from

1underrepresented groups; after Northwestern, he began serving
2as the founding Director of College Counseling for Urban Prep
3Charter Academy for Young Men - Englewood Campus; and
 
4    WHEREAS, At Urban Prep, Kenneth Hutchinson led
5college-counseling efforts and was charged with helping to
6ensure the school accomplished its goal of a 100% college
7acceptance rate for every graduate of the school; his
8persistence soon paid off, as students were placed in summer
9enrichment programs at colleges and universities around the
10world, including Thailand, Argentina, Ghana, South Africa,
11China, Mexico, England, the Dominican Republic, and Costa Rica;
12during his six years with the organization, he designed an
13approach to college counseling that led him to successfully
14achieve their goal of a 100% college acceptance rate; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Kenneth Hutchinson attended the Harvard
16University Graduate School of Education's Institute for Urban
17School Leaders and graduated with a Master of Science and
18Communication from Northwestern University; he served on a
19variety of boards and programs in the education sector,
20including Penn State University's Multicultural Resource
21Center's Black Male Empowerment Group; he was a reader and
22National Ambassador for the Bill Gates Millennium Scholarship;

1    WHEREAS, Kenneth Hutchinson was baptized at Christ Temple
2Apostolic Faith Church in October 2001; he ministered through
3Oasis Bible Study, preaching and teaching on a variety of
4college campuses including Northwestern University, Princeton
5University, Wesleyan University, and the University of Cape
6Coast in Ghana; in 2015, he joined the All Nations Worship
7Assembly, where he served on the worship team, the prophetic
8team, and the deliverance team; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Kenneth Hutchinson joined the Cristo Rey Network
10in September 2015 as the Director of College Initiatives; among
11his greatest accomplishments was fostering a collaborative
12community of nearly 70 college counselors and alumni advisors,
13whose roles were similar to the one he previously had at Urban
14Prep; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Kenneth Hutchinson was a loving father who shared
16countless funny sayings and inside jokes with his family; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Kenneth Hutchinson is survived by his wife,
18LaSandra Nicole Hutchinson; his son, Noah; his daughters,
19Noelle, Bella, and Halle; his mother, Leslie Matthews
20(Theodore); his father, Kenneth (Debra) Hutchinson; his
21brother, Maurice (Kemba) Hendrix; his stepbrothers, Quentin
22Ray and Antonio Ray (Aisha); his sisters, Sade Hutchinson and
23Kendra Jenkins; his mother-in-law, Lucille (Michael) Green;

1his brother-in-law, Roderick Houston; his nieces, Laila,
2Alyssa, and Jayden; and an extended family of beloved aunts,
3uncles, and cousins; therefore, be it
 
4    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
5HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
6mourn the passing of Kenneth Dion Hutchinson, and extend our
7sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew
8and loved him; and be it further
 
9    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
10presented to the family of Kenneth Hutchinson as an expression
11of our deepest sympathy.
