HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Dr. Irene
4H. Brodie, who passed away on January 18, 2018; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Dr. Brodie was born in Armorel, Arkansas to Ira E.
6and Ressie Elder Hale on February 27, 1931; she was educated in
7the Missouri Public School System and attended Lincoln
8University in Jefferson City, Missouri before transferring to
9Chicago Teacher's College (Chicago State University), where
10she attained her Bachelor of Education; she then attended the
11University of Chicago, where she attained her Master of Science
12Degree, and Nova University (Nova Southeastern University),
13where she was awarded her Doctorate of Education; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Dr. Brodie served as a 6th grade teacher at Kellar
15Jr. High School in Robbins and taught English at Richards High
16School in Oak Lawn; she later became assistant principal at
17Turner Elementary School and Professor of Communications at
18Moraine Valley Community College in Palos Hills, ultimately
19becoming Dean of Basic Education/Academic Skills at Moraine
20Valley Community College; and
 
21    WHEREAS, Dr. Brodie was appointed village clerk for Robbins
22and served in that position for 12 years; she went on to serve

1as the mayor of Robbins for 24 years from 1989 to 2013; she
2served as the Secretary of the National Conference of Black
3Mayors and was a member of both the South Suburban Mayor's
4Association and President Bill Clinton's Environmental
5Think-Tank Group; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Dr. Brodie was a member of numerous civic and
7community organizations including serving as president of the
8board of The Libra School; she was a member of The Ada S.
9McKinley Community Services, Inc. Board of Directors, the Blue
10Island Rotary Club, and the Chicago Southland Chamber of
11Commerce; she was also a member of the Moraine Valley Community
12College Foundation and was recognized as one of the college's
13most notable benefactors; she was a member of the Great Hope
14Missionary Baptist Church in Robbins; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Dr. Brodie was preceded in death by her parents;
16her sisters, Ethel H. Banks and Rev. Dr. Evelyn H. Meachum; her
17husband, J.E. Brodie; and her daughter, Jeraye Brodie; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Dr. Brodie is survived by her sister, Bertha
19(George) Buckner; her niece, Lori Buckner; her nephew, Byron
20Buckner and his wife, Cheptoo Kositany-Buckner; her
21great-nieces, Chebet and Maya Buckner; and many other relatives
22and friends; therefore, be it

1    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
2HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
3mourn the passing of Dr. Irene H. Brodie, and extend our
4sincere condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew
5and loved her; and be it further
 
6    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
7presented to the family of Dr. Brodie as an expression of our
8deepest sympathy.
