AMENDMENT TO HOUSE RESOLUTION 127

2    AMENDMENT NO. ___. Amend House Resolution 127 by deleting
3everything and replacing it with the following:
 
4    "WHEREAS, On October 12, 1492, Christopher Columbus, an
5Italian explorer sailing under the flag of Spain, spotted the
6island of San Salvador in The Bahamas, discovering the "New
7World" and forever changing the history of the world; and
 
8    WHEREAS, The anniversary of Columbus's landing in the
9Americas became a national holiday in the United States in
101937; it became a State holiday in Illinois in 1963; and
 
11    WHEREAS, The arrival of Christopher Columbus to the
12Americas brought forth an era of terror and oppression unlike
13any seen before in human history; he helped introduce the
14concept of slavery to the Americas and murdered and dehumanized
15countless numbers of indigenous peoples; and

1    WHEREAS, In 1977, a movement began to celebrate "Indigenous
2Peoples' Day", also known as "Native American Day", on Columbus
3Day as a counter-celebration that promotes Native American
4culture and the celebration of its history; in the years that
5followed, several local governments and institutions across
6the United States have either renamed or canceled Columbus Day
7due to the controversy over his legacy; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Recognizing "Indigenous Peoples' Day" would send
9a clear message that the indigenous people of the Americas are
10valued in our society, and it will give a voice to the most
11marginalized group in our nation, Native Americans; therefore,
12be it
 
13    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
14HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
15urge the State of Illinois to designate the second Monday in
16October of each year as "Indigenous Peoples Day" and "Columbus
17Day" in honor of those that were in North America prior to the
18arrival of Christopher Columbus; and be it further
 
19    RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
20presented to Governor Bruce Rauner, the Illinois Speaker of the
21House of Representatives, the Illinois Senate President, the
22Illinois House Minority Leader, and the Illinois Senate
