| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
| 3 | | learn of the death of Bill Grimshaw, who passed away on March |
| 4 | | 30, 2016 at the age of 77; and
|
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Bill Grimshaw grew up near Belmont Avenue and |
| 6 | | Clifton Avenue in Chicago; his parents were Elmer Grimshaw and |
| 7 | | Violet Teppo Grimshaw; and
|
| 8 | | WHEREAS, Bill Grimshaw attended Lane Tech and Lake View |
| 9 | | High Schools before serving in the United States Army in |
| 10 | | France; after returning to Chicago, he studied at Wright Junior |
| 11 | | College; in 1962, he entered the University of Chicago, where |
| 12 | | he earned a political science degree; while working at |
| 13 | | Chicago's main post office, he met Jacquelyne Lane, whom he |
| 14 | | married in 1964; in 1973, he and his wife moved to Greenwood, |
| 15 | | where they lived until 2009; and
|
| 16 | | WHEREAS, After college, Bill Grimshaw taught political |
| 17 | | science at the Illinois Institute of Technology for 30 years; |
| 18 | | he was also a visiting associate professor at the University of |
| 19 | | Chicago; and
|
| 20 | | WHEREAS, Bill Grimshaw and his wife were instrumental in |
| 21 | | the election of Harold Washington, the city's first black |
|

| 1 | | mayor, in 1983; the Grimshaws and other campaign workers |
| 2 | | studied precincts where voters had rejected other candidates |
| 3 | | and targeted those areas with volunteers, campaign literature, |
| 4 | | and appearances by future Mayor Washington; and
|
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Bill Grimshaw was the author of the 1995 book, |
| 6 | | "Bitter Fruit: Black Politics and the Chicago Machine, |
| 7 | | 1931-1991", which is still regarding as a classic in the field |
| 8 | | in Chicago politics; and |
| 9 | | WHEREAS, Bill Grimshaw enjoyed breeding Rottweilers; |
| 10 | | originally planning to sell them, he became so attached that he |
| 11 | | could not bring himself to do so; they eventually found homes |
| 12 | | for the dogs, except the matriarch, Jasper, and her strongest |
| 13 | | puppy, Bruiser; he also enjoyed Haagen-Dazs Rocky Road ice |
| 14 | | cream, reading the works of Raymond Chandler and Elmore |
| 15 | | Leonard, talking politics at the Valois Restaurant, spending |
| 16 | | summers at the Wisconsin Dells, and spending time with his |
| 17 | | family; and
|
| 18 | | WHEREAS, Bill Grimshaw is survived by his wife, Jacquelyne; |
| 19 | | his daughter, Kim Grimshaw Bolton; his son, Chris; his brother, |
| 20 | | Alan; and four grandchildren; therefore, be it
