HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Roberta
4Wilson; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Roberta Wilson came to Chicago from Thomson,
6Georgia as part of the Second Great Migration of Black
7Americans in 1946, taking a job in the Hotel Bismarck as a
8member of Local 46 Laundry Workers Union; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Roberta Wilson later worked in education as a
10member of the Professional and School Related Personnel (PSRP)
11team in Chicago Public Schools, devoting her time and talents
12to the young people of Austin High School, John Hay Community
13Academy, Charles Sumner Math and Science Community Academy,
14Bernhard Moos Elementary School, and Schubert Elementary
15School; and
 
16    WHEREAS, After retiring from Chicago Public Schools
17following nearly 40 years of service, Roberta Wilson remained
18a dedicated member of the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU),
19serving as sergeant at arms at every CTU House of Delegates
20meeting; and
 
21    WHEREAS, Roberta Wilson was a devoted member of Third

1Unitarian Church in Austin for more than half a century,
2organizing coat drives, food pantries, block clubs, and a
3scholarship fund that helped West Side youth attend college;
4and
 
5    WHEREAS, Roberta Wilson has left a lasting impact on the
6labor movement and the youth of Chicago; therefore, be it
 
7    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
8HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
9we mourn the passing of Roberta Wilson and extend our sincere
10condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved
11her; and be it further
 
12    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
13presented to the family of Roberta Wilson as an expression of
14our deepest sympathy.
