Amends the School Code. Provides that a pupil entering the 9th grade in the 2019-2020 school year or a subsequent school year must successfully complete one semester of computer science as a prerequisite to receiving a high school diploma. Effective immediately.

|
| 2 | | Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
|
| 3 | | represented in the General Assembly:
|
| 4 | | Section 5. The School Code is amended by changing Section |
| 5 | | 27-22 as follows: |
| 6 | | (105 ILCS 5/27-22) (from Ch. 122, par. 27-22)
|
| 7 | | Sec. 27-22. Required high school courses.
|
| 8 | | (a) (Blank).
|
| 9 | | (b) (Blank). |
| 10 | | (c) (Blank). |
| 11 | | (d) (Blank). |
| 12 | | (e) As a prerequisite to receiving a high school diploma, |
| 13 | | each pupil
entering the 9th grade in the 2008-2009 school year |
| 14 | | or a subsequent
school year must, in addition to other course |
| 15 | | requirements, successfully
complete all of the following |
| 16 | | courses: |
| 17 | | (1) Four years of language arts. |
| 18 | | (2) Two years of writing intensive courses, one of |
| 19 | | which must be English and the other of which may be English |
| 20 | | or any other subject. When applicable, writing-intensive |
| 21 | | courses may be counted towards the fulfillment of other |
| 22 | | graduation requirements.

| 23 | | (3) Three years of mathematics, one of which must be |

| 1 | | Algebra I, one of which must include geometry content, and |
| 2 | | one of which may be an Advanced Placement computer science |
| 3 | | course if the pupil successfully completes Algebra II or an |
| 4 | | integrated mathematics course with Algebra II content. |
| 5 | | (4) Two years of science. |
| 6 | | (5) Two years of social studies, of which at least one |
| 7 | | year must be history of the United States or a combination |
| 8 | | of history of the United States and American government |
| 9 | | and, beginning with pupils entering the 9th grade in the |
| 10 | | 2016-2017 school year and each school year thereafter, at |
| 11 | | least one semester must be civics, which shall help young |
| 12 | | people acquire and learn to use the skills, knowledge, and |
| 13 | | attitudes that will prepare them to be competent and |
| 14 | | responsible citizens throughout their lives. Civics course |
| 15 | | content shall focus on government institutions, the |
| 16 | | discussion of current and controversial issues, service |
| 17 | | learning, and simulations of the democratic process. |
| 18 | | School districts may utilize private funding available for |
| 19 | | the purposes of offering civics education. |
| 20 | | (6) One year chosen from (A) music, (B) art, (C) |
| 21 | | foreign language, which shall be deemed to include American |
| 22 | | Sign Language, or (D) vocational education. |
| 23 | | (7) With respect to a pupil entering the 9th grade in |
| 24 | | the 2019-2020 school year or a subsequent school year, one |
| 25 | | semester of computer science, which must be in addition to |
| 26 | | any computer science course taken to satisfy the |

| 1 | | mathematics requirement under subdivision (3) of this |
| 2 | | subsection (e). |
| 3 | | (f) The State Board of Education shall develop and inform |
| 4 | | school districts of standards for writing-intensive |
| 5 | | coursework.
|
| 6 | | (f-5) If a school district offers an Advanced Placement |
| 7 | | computer science course to high school students, then the |
| 8 | | school board must designate that course as equivalent to a high |
| 9 | | school mathematics course and must denote on the student's |
| 10 | | transcript that the Advanced Placement computer science course |
| 11 | | qualifies as a mathematics-based, quantitative course for |
| 12 | | students in accordance with subdivision (3) of subsection (e) |
| 13 | | of this Section. |
| 14 | | (g) This amendatory Act of 1983 does not apply to pupils |
| 15 | | entering the 9th grade
in 1983-1984 school year and prior |
| 16 | | school years or to students
with disabilities whose course of |
| 17 | | study is determined by an individualized
education program.

| 18 | | This amendatory Act of the 94th General Assembly does not |
| 19 | | apply
to pupils entering the 9th grade in the 2004-2005 school |
| 20 | | year or a prior
school year or to students with disabilities |
| 21 | | whose course of study is
determined by an individualized |
| 22 | | education program.
|
| 23 | | This amendatory Act of the 100th General Assembly does not |
| 24 | | apply to pupils entering the 9th grade in the 2018-2019 school |
| 25 | | year or a prior school year or to students with disabilities |

| 2 | | (h) The provisions of this Section are subject to the |
| 3 | | provisions of
Section
27-22.05 of this Code and the |
| 4 | | Postsecondary and Workforce Readiness Act.
