Biography

As Senator for the 59th Senate District, Paul Jacobs is a strong voice for the families, communities, and businesses of Southern Illinois.

Senator Jacobs was appointed to the Illinois Senate after serving as State Representative since 2020. In his new role, he continues his commitment to representing the values and priorities of Southern Illinois, with a focus on fiscal responsibility, ethical reform, and supporting the hardworking people of the region.

Before joining the Senate, Senator Jacobs built a record of public service in the Illinois House of Representatives, where he worked to advocate for the needs of Southern Illinois families, small businesses, and local communities. His legislative experience, combined with his background as a veteran and small business owner, gives him a firsthand understanding of the issues facing the people he represents.

Senator Jacobs is a United States Navy veteran, having served from 1965 to 1971. Following his military service, he began a long career in optometry and has practiced in Southern Illinois for more than 47 years. In addition to his work in health care, Senator Jacobs and his wife, Rhoda, opened Von Jakob Vineyard in Alto Pass more than 27 years ago, further deepening their roots in the region’s small business and agricultural communities.

Throughout his life, Senator Jacobs has remained closely connected to Southern Illinois. It is where he raised his family, built his businesses, and dedicated himself to serving others. As State Senator, he continues to bring that same commitment to the Capitol, working to protect taxpayers, promote opportunity, and ensure the voices of Southern Illinois are heard.

Senator Jacobs and his wife, Rhoda, live in Pomona. Together, they have built their lives around family, faith, service, and a deep commitment to the Southern Illinois communities they call home.

Illinois’ 59th Senate District is located in Southern Illinois and includes all or part of the following counties: Alexander, Pulaski, Massac, Johnson, Pope, Union, Williamson, Saline, Hardin, Jackson, Franklin, White, Hamilton, and Gallatin.
