| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened |
| 3 | | to learn of the death of Marcus M. "Mark" Olson of Peoria, who |
| 4 | | passed away on January 3, 2026; and |
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Mark Olson, the son of Frank and Ida (Anttila) |
| 6 | | Olson, was born in Marquette, Michigan on October 9, 1927; he |
| 7 | | married M. Elaine Stolpe on September 16, 1947, and she |
| 8 | | preceded him in death on October 24, 1996; he served in the |
| 9 | | United States Army; he earned his bachelor's degree in |
| 10 | | engineering from Michigan Technological University (Michigan |
| 11 | | Tech), where he played hockey and was named MVP for three |
| 12 | | seasons; he later received his master's degree in engineering |
| 13 | | from Bradley University; and |
| 14 | | WHEREAS, Mark Olson moved from Michigan's Upper Peninsula |
| 15 | | to Peoria, Illinois in 1963, where he began his career as an |
| 16 | | electrical engineer in defense products at Caterpillar Inc.; |
| 17 | | he retired in 1986; and |
| 18 | | WHEREAS, Mark Olson, a pioneer in youth hockey, was |
| 19 | | instrumental in establishing programs in Escanaba, Michigan |
| 20 | | and later in Central Illinois, co-founding the Peoria Blades |
| 21 | | with Pete BardezBanian; he remained deeply involved in the |
| 22 | | sport throughout his life, serving as a high school, college, |

| 1 | | and amateur hockey referee, and he proudly officiated an NCAA |
| 2 | | Division I Final Four Championship Game; and |
| 3 | | WHEREAS, Mark Olson was a past president and lifetime |
| 4 | | member of the Independent Sports Club of Peoria, and he was |
| 5 | | also a lifetime member of the Old Timers Baseball Association |
| 6 | | and the Rivermen Booster Club; and |
| 7 | | WHEREAS, Mark Olson was inducted into numerous halls of |
| 8 | | fame, including the Michigan Tech Athletic Hall of Fame, the |
| 9 | | Upper Peninsula Sports Hall of Fame, the Illinois Hockey Hall |
| 10 | | of Fame, the Peoria Rivermen Hall of Fame, and the Greater |
| 11 | | Peoria Area Sports Hall of Fame, where he also received the |
| 12 | | Neve Harms Award; in his youth, he was a three-time world |
| 13 | | logrolling champion in the junior division, and he later |
| 14 | | earned multiple second place finishes in the senior division; |
| 15 | | and |
| 16 | | WHEREAS, Mark Olson was a devoted father, grandfather, |
| 17 | | great-grandfather, great-great-grandfather, and uncle; known |
| 18 | | affectionately as "Gramps" or "Grandpa", he was famous for |
| 19 | | sending handwritten cards and letters filled with |
| 20 | | encouragement and his trademark advice; and |
| 21 | | WHEREAS, Mark Olson was preceded in death by his parents; |
| 22 | | his sons, Richard M. "Ric" Olson and Joseph A. Olson; two |

| 1 | | infant grandchildren; his son-in-law, Gerald "Jerry" Brady |
| 2 | | Jr.; his sisters, Ruth and Virginia; and his brothers, Wesley, |
| 3 | | Allan, Paul, Gordon, Edward, Roy, Ted, and Weldon; and |
| 4 | | WHEREAS, Mark Olson is survived by his son, Michael P. |
| 5 | | (Laurie) Olson; his daughters, Susan I. Brady, Jane A. (Mark) |
| 6 | | Golowski, and Patti L. (Bob) Keegan; 15 grandchildren; 19 |
| 7 | | great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren, with |
| 8 | | three more expected in 2026; his sister-in-law, Helen Olson; |
| 9 | | and many nieces and nephews; therefore, be it |
| 10 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL |
| 11 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of |
| 12 | | Marcus M. "Mark" Olson and extend our sincere condolences to |
| 13 | | his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it |
| 14 | | further |
| 15 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
| 16 | | presented to the family of Mark Olson as an expression of our |
| 17 | | deepest sympathy. |
