HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives wish to recognize the Village of Hanover Park on the occasion of its 2025 Juneteenth celebration; and

WHEREAS, Juneteenth is a federal holiday commemorating the abolition of slavery in the United States and its territories in 1865; it is also observed for celebrating African American culture; and

WHEREAS, President Abraham Lincoln enacted the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, freeing slaves throughout the south; however, it was not until June 19, 1865, over two years later and over two months after General Robert E. Lee's surrender at the Appomattox Court House, that slaves in Galveston, Texas received the news that the Civil War had ended and that the enslaved were freed, making it the official end of slavery; and

WHEREAS, Juneteenth has been typically observed on June 19th since 1865; and

WHEREAS, The Hanover Park Sister Cities Committee will host Hanover Park's Juneteenth celebration at the Hanover Park Sport Complex on June 21, 2025, with live music, vendors, food trucks, activities for children, and more; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we recognize the Village of Hanover Park's Juneteenth celebration as a time to reflect and to commemorate the end of slavery; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the Village of Hanover Park as an expression of our esteem and respect.
