| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
| 3 | | Representatives wish to congratulate the Village of Riverside |
| 4 | | on the occasion of its 150th anniversary; and |
| 5 | | WHEREAS, The area now known as Riverside was originally |
| 6 | | home to diverse Native American communities long before the |
| 7 | | arrival of European explorers and traders; and |
| 8 | | WHEREAS, In the 1820s, the Riverside area served as a |
| 9 | | major trading post due to its proximity to the Chicago Portage |
| 10 | | and the Portage Trail, and the location welcomed many settlers |
| 11 | | from the 1830s to the 1860s; and |
| 12 | | WHEREAS, The Riverside Improvement Company hired Frederick |
| 13 | | Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux to prepare a town plan for the |
| 14 | | area along the bend of the Des Plaines River in 1869; and |
| 15 | | WHEREAS, Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux conceived |
| 16 | | the General Plan of Riverside, which the Riverside Improvement |
| 17 | | Company quickly began implementing; and |
| 18 | | WHEREAS, The residents of unincorporated Riverside |
| 19 | | determined that a proper village government was necessary to |
| 20 | | complete the General Plan of Riverside and to provide |

| 1 | | essential public services for their new town, and the 29 |
| 2 | | residents of Riverside voted to officially incorporate the |
| 3 | | Village of Riverside as a municipality of the State of |
| 4 | | Illinois on August 8, 1875; and |
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Riverside's incorporation was a pivotal moment |
| 6 | | that established the village as an independent municipal |
| 7 | | entity with its own governing structure and the ability to |
| 8 | | implement local ordinances, manage public services, and |
| 9 | | preserve and grow the community's unique character; and |
| 10 | | WHEREAS, Due to the volunteer efforts of Riverside |
| 11 | | residents for the past 150 years, the essence of Frederick Law |
| 12 | | Olmsted and Calvert Vaux's General Plan remains intact, with |
| 13 | | the village still consisting of expansive green parkways and |
| 14 | | public spaces, gas-lit street lanterns, and curvilinear |
| 15 | | streets; as a result, the village has enjoyed a National |
| 16 | | Historic Landmark designation since 1970; and |
| 17 | | WHEREAS, Riverside is celebrating its 150th anniversary of |
| 18 | | incorporation in 2025, presenting an occasion to celebrate the |
| 19 | | past, acknowledge the present, and envision a bright future |
| 20 | | for generations to come; and |
| 21 | | WHEREAS, Through celebrating this sesquicentennial |
| 22 | | anniversary, the residents of the Village of Riverside have |

| 1 | | been given the opportunity to honor the legacy of Riverside, |
| 2 | | to honor the 19th-century volunteers who understood the |
| 3 | | necessity and benefits of self-government, and to honor 20th |
| 4 | | and 21st-century volunteers who have continued to preserve and |
| 5 | | respect the village; therefore, be it |
| 6 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE |
| 7 | | HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that |
| 8 | | we congratulate the Village of Riverside on the occasion of |
| 9 | | its sesquicentennial anniversary; and be it further |
| 10 | | RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be |
| 11 | | presented to the leaders of the Village of Riverside as a |
| 12 | | symbol of our respect and esteem. |
