HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives wish to congratulate Mayor Tyrone Echols of the City of Venice on the occasion of his retirement; and

WHEREAS, Mayor Echols was born in Memphis, Tennessee on December 5, 1937; he and his family migrated to Venice, Illinois in 1946; he was educated at Dunbar Grade School, Madison High School, and Southern Illinois University; and

WHEREAS, Mayor Echols has held his mayoral position for over 40 years; during his tenure, he has striven to continue upgrading the City of Venice through removing derelict buildings, attracting new businesses, and increasing the revenue produced by the means of sales taxes; and

WHEREAS, Mayor Echols has also served the community as a commissioner of the Madison County Sheriff's Office, as an alderperson, and as a precinct committeeperson for Venice Township #1; and

WHEREAS, Mayor Echols has also served as a board member of America's Central Port District and the Southwestern Illinois Law Enforcement Commission, a past president of the Illinois chapter of the National Conference of Black Mayors, a past legislative aide to State Representative Jim McPike, and a past union steward of the International Union of Operating Engineers; and

WHEREAS, Mayor Echols is a member of Mt. Nebo Baptist Church, the Jericho #120 Masonic Lodge, Tyree Consistory #64, and the Madison branch of the NAACP; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate Mayor Tyrone Echols of the City of Venice on his retirement, and we wish him all the best in his future endeavors; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Mayor Echols as a symbol of our esteem and respect.
