| 1 | AN ACT concerning education. | ||||||
| 2 | Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois, | ||||||
| 3 | represented in the General Assembly: | ||||||
| 4 | Section 5. The School Code is amended by adding Section | ||||||
| 5 | 2-3.206 as follows: | ||||||
| 6 | (105 ILCS 5/2-3.206 new) | ||||||
| 7 | Sec. 2-3.206. Educators' experience teaching history; | ||||||
| 8 | research and professional learning opportunities. | ||||||
| 9 | (a) Subject to appropriation, the State Board of Education | ||||||
| 10 | shall conduct research using mixed methodologies to understand | ||||||
| 11 | the experience of educators in this State teaching history to | ||||||
| 12 | students across all grade levels in accordance with applicable | ||||||
| 13 | learning standards and mandated units of study. This shall | ||||||
| 14 | include, but not be limited to, surveying how instructional | ||||||
| 15 | resources are being funded and incorporated into instruction, | ||||||
| 16 | participation in professional learning opportunities, and | ||||||
| 17 | educators' experience and comfort in implementing | ||||||
| 18 | inclusive-history-mandated units of study. The State Board of | ||||||
| 19 | Education shall report its findings and recommendations from | ||||||
| 20 | this research to the General Assembly by December 15, 2026. | ||||||
| 21 | (b) Subject to appropriation, the State Board of Education | ||||||
| 22 | shall provide professional learning opportunities for | ||||||
| 23 | educators across all grade levels to further support the | ||||||

| 1 | inclusive, inquiry-based teaching of history in schools in | ||||||
| 2 | this State. | ||||||
| 3 | Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect upon | ||||||
| 4 | becoming law. | ||||||
