HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Malik T.
4Murray of Chicago, who passed away on April 19, 2025; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Malik Murray, the son of the Honorable Leonard
6Murray and Linda Diane Gray Murray, was born in 1974; he was
7raised in Chicago's South Shore neighborhood, and he had
8recently become a resident of Chicago's West Town
9neighborhood; he attended St. Philip Neri Elementary School
10and graduated from Saint Ignatius College Prep in 1992, where
11he was a standout player on the men's basketball team, being
12named one of Chicago Tribune's Athletes of the Week in 1991 and
13averaging 20.1 points and 9.5 rebounds per game; he earned his
14bachelor's degree in finance from the Driehaus College of
15Business at DePaul University in 1996, where he was a
16four-year letter winner on the men's basketball team and
17served as the team's seventh man during his senior year; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Malik Murray interned at the Chicago Mercantile
19Exchange during his undergraduate studies, introducing him to
20a career in finance; after graduating from DePaul, he worked
21for Bank One Brokerage for eight years, where he eventually
22served as a broker for its international exchange-traded
23products; he earned his MBA in Finance from the Kellstadt

1Graduate School of Business at DePaul University in 2004; that
2same year, he joined Ariel Investments, a global asset
3management firm based in Chicago, where he eventually rose to
4the position of senior vice president and head of business
5development and institutional marketing, and he was noted for
6always putting his clients and colleagues first and for
7inspiring excellence in others; during his career, he also
8worked as a referee for the NBA Development League, now known
9as the G League; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Malik Murray spent his career giving back; he
11served on the Saint Ignatius College Prep Board of Directors
12from 2017 to 2023, where he was the founding chair of the
13School Culture Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging
14Committee and served as a mentor to many players, students,
15and coaches; he served on the DePaul University Board of
16Trustees beginning in 2023, where he was a member of the
17Finance and Investment Committee and co-vice chair of the
18Athletics Committee; he established the Linda Diane Gray
19Murray Excellence Through Education, Equity and Inclusion
20Endowment to help subsidize tuition for deserving students at
21Saint Ignatius College Prep and created the Malik T. Murray
22Endowed Scholarship for Excellence in Basketball and Finance
23at DePaul University; he also held leadership roles with the
24National Association of Securities Professionals; and

1    WHEREAS, Malik Murray possessed a fiercely competitive,
2yet abundantly kind spirit, and he was known for his loyalty,
3generosity, integrity, and commitment to service; outside of
4work, he was an avid golfer and enjoyed traveling; he will
5especially be remembered as a generous man who lived with deep
6purpose, lifted others, and built lasting community wherever
7he went; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Malik Murray was preceded in death by his mother;
9and
 
10    WHEREAS, Malik Murray is survived by his partner,
11Elizabeth "Liz"; his father; his sisters, Nubia Murray Davis
12and Kai Murray; and his brother, Kamau Murray; therefore, be
13it
 
14    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
15HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
16we mourn the passing of Malik T. Murray and extend our sincere
17condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved
18him; and be it further
 
19    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
20presented to the family of Malik Murray as an expression of our
21deepest sympathy.
