| 2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
| 3 | Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Malik T. | ||||||
| 4 | Murray of Chicago, who passed away on April 19, 2025; and | ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, Malik Murray, the son of the Honorable Leonard | ||||||
| 6 | Murray and Linda Diane Gray Murray, was born in 1974; he was | ||||||
| 7 | raised in Chicago's South Shore neighborhood, and he had | ||||||
| 8 | recently become a resident of Chicago's West Town | ||||||
| 9 | neighborhood; he attended St. Philip Neri Elementary School | ||||||
| 10 | and graduated from Saint Ignatius College Prep in 1992, where | ||||||
| 11 | he was a standout player on the men's basketball team, being | ||||||
| 12 | named one of Chicago Tribune's Athletes of the Week in 1991 and | ||||||
| 13 | averaging 20.1 points and 9.5 rebounds per game; he earned his | ||||||
| 14 | bachelor's degree in finance from the Driehaus College of | ||||||
| 15 | Business at DePaul University in 1996, where he was a | ||||||
| 16 | four-year letter winner on the men's basketball team and | ||||||
| 17 | served as the team's seventh man during his senior year; and | ||||||
| 18 | WHEREAS, Malik Murray interned at the Chicago Mercantile | ||||||
| 19 | Exchange during his undergraduate studies, introducing him to | ||||||
| 20 | a career in finance; after graduating from DePaul, he worked | ||||||
| 21 | for Bank One Brokerage for eight years, where he eventually | ||||||
| 22 | served as a broker for its international exchange-traded | ||||||
| 23 | products; he earned his MBA in Finance from the Kellstadt | ||||||

| 1 | Graduate School of Business at DePaul University in 2004; that | ||||||
| 2 | same year, he joined Ariel Investments, a global asset | ||||||
| 3 | management firm based in Chicago, where he eventually rose to | ||||||
| 4 | the position of senior vice president and head of business | ||||||
| 5 | development and institutional marketing, and he was noted for | ||||||
| 6 | always putting his clients and colleagues first and for | ||||||
| 7 | inspiring excellence in others; during his career, he also | ||||||
| 8 | worked as a referee for the NBA Development League, now known | ||||||
| 9 | as the G League; and | ||||||
| 10 | WHEREAS, Malik Murray spent his career giving back; he | ||||||
| 11 | served on the Saint Ignatius College Prep Board of Directors | ||||||
| 12 | from 2017 to 2023, where he was the founding chair of the | ||||||
| 13 | School Culture Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging | ||||||
| 14 | Committee and served as a mentor to many players, students, | ||||||
| 15 | and coaches; he served on the DePaul University Board of | ||||||
| 16 | Trustees beginning in 2023, where he was a member of the | ||||||
| 17 | Finance and Investment Committee and co-vice chair of the | ||||||
| 18 | Athletics Committee; he established the Linda Diane Gray | ||||||
| 19 | Murray Excellence Through Education, Equity and Inclusion | ||||||
| 20 | Endowment to help subsidize tuition for deserving students at | ||||||
| 21 | Saint Ignatius College Prep and created the Malik T. Murray | ||||||
| 22 | Endowed Scholarship for Excellence in Basketball and Finance | ||||||
| 23 | at DePaul University; he also held leadership roles with the | ||||||
| 24 | National Association of Securities Professionals; and | ||||||

| 1 | WHEREAS, Malik Murray possessed a fiercely competitive, | ||||||
| 2 | yet abundantly kind spirit, and he was known for his loyalty, | ||||||
| 3 | generosity, integrity, and commitment to service; outside of | ||||||
| 4 | work, he was an avid golfer and enjoyed traveling; he will | ||||||
| 5 | especially be remembered as a generous man who lived with deep | ||||||
| 6 | purpose, lifted others, and built lasting community wherever | ||||||
| 7 | he went; and | ||||||
| 8 | WHEREAS, Malik Murray was preceded in death by his mother; | ||||||
| 9 | and | ||||||
| 10 | WHEREAS, Malik Murray is survived by his partner, | ||||||
| 11 | Elizabeth "Liz"; his father; his sisters, Nubia Murray Davis | ||||||
| 12 | and Kai Murray; and his brother, Kamau Murray; therefore, be | ||||||
| 13 | it | ||||||
| 14 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | ||||||
| 15 | HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
| 16 | we mourn the passing of Malik T. Murray and extend our sincere | ||||||
| 17 | condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved | ||||||
| 18 | him; and be it further | ||||||
| 19 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
| 20 | presented to the family of Malik Murray as an expression of our | ||||||
| 21 | deepest sympathy. | ||||||
