HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Each year, Illinois faces catastrophic events,
3such as tornadoes, hail, thunderstorms, and flooding, all of
4which carry the potential to cause serious damage or, even
5worse, total destruction to private property and homes; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Following disasters, stressed and strained
7homeowners are vulnerable to predatory practices from
8dishonest contractors fraudulently inflating repair or
9rebuilding costs; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Predatory practices by unscrupulous contractors
11taking advantage of these stressful scenarios ultimately
12increase costs for consumers by driving up insurance premiums
13and forcing insurers to reevaluate risk; and
 
14    WHEREAS, It is imperative that an effective public
15outreach campaign highlights the various types of contractor
16fraud schemes to help educate consumers on how to identify and
17avoid such schemes; and
 
18    WHEREAS, The National Insurance Crime Bureau encourages
19Illinoisans to get at least three written estimates when
20hiring a contractor, check contractor credentials, and work
21closely with insurers during the entire rebuilding process;

2    WHEREAS, The National Insurance Crime Bureau, in
3collaboration with its local and state partners in Illinois,
4including law enforcement, first responders, legislators, and
5state officials, are committed to educating Illinoisans about
6predatory practices by dishonest contractors; therefore, be it
 
7    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
8HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
9we declare May 19-23, 2025 as Contractor Fraud Awareness Week
10in the State of Illinois and encourage all Illinoisans to
11become familiar with contractor fraud and participate in the
12various programs during the fifth annual event; and be it
13further
 
14    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
15presented to the National Insurance Crime Bureau as an
16expression of our respect and esteem.
