HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Prader-Willi syndrome is a complex genetic
3disorder that occurs in approximately 1 out of every 15,000
4births and the most commonly known genetic cause of
5life-threatening obesity; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Prader-Willi syndrome affects males and females
7with equal frequency and affects all races and ethnicities;
8and
 
9    WHEREAS, Prader-Willi syndrome causes an extreme and
10insatiable appetite, often resulting in morbid obesity, which
11is the major cause of death for individuals with the syndrome;
12and
 
13    WHEREAS, Prader-Willi syndrome also causes cognitive and
14learning disabilities as well as behavioral difficulties, such
15as obsessive-compulsive disorder and struggles with
16controlling emotions; and
 
17    WHEREAS, The hunger, metabolic, and behavioral
18characteristics of Prader-Willi syndrome force affected
19individuals to require constant and lifelong supervision in a
20controlled environment; and

1    WHEREAS, Studies have shown that there is a high morbidity
2and mortality rate for individuals with Prader-Willi syndrome;
3and
 
4    WHEREAS, There is no known cure for Prader-Willi syndrome;
5and
 
6    WHEREAS, Early diagnosis of Prader-Willi syndrome allows
7families to access treatment, intervention services, and
8support from health professionals, advocacy organizations, and
9other families who are dealing with the syndrome; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Recently discovered treatments, such as human
11growth hormone, are improving the quality of life for
12individuals with the syndrome and offer new hope to families,
13but many difficult symptoms associated with Prader-Willi
14syndrome remain untreated; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Increased research into Prader-Willi syndrome can
16lead to a better understanding of the disorder, more effective
17treatments, and an eventual cure for Prader-Willi syndrome;
18and
 
19    WHEREAS, Increased research into Prader-Willi syndrome is
20likely to improve our understanding of common public health
21concerns, including childhood obesity and mental health; and

1    WHEREAS, Advocacy organizations have designated May as
2National Prader-Willi Syndrome Awareness Month; therefore, be
3it
 
4    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
5HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
6we declare May 2025 as Prader-Willi Syndrome Awareness Month
7in the State of Illinois; and be it further
 
8    RESOLVED, That we express our support for raising
9awareness and educating the public about Prader-Willi Syndrome
10and increasing research and funding into the causes and
11treatments of the disease.
