| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
| 3 | | Representatives wish to congratulate the Waukegan Alumnae |
| 4 | | Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. on the occasion of |
| 5 | | its 45th anniversary; and |
| 6 | | WHEREAS, On November 3, 1979, the Waukegan Alumnae Chapter |
| 7 | | became an official chartered chapter of Delta Sigma Theta |
| 8 | | Sorority, Inc. through the efforts of 18 women, many with |
| 9 | | young families, who worked tirelessly to form a chapter in |
| 10 | | Lake County in the 1970s; and |
| 11 | | WHEREAS, Upon becoming chartered, the members of the |
| 12 | | Waukegan Alumnae Chapter immediately established its |
| 13 | | organizational structure by electing officers, with the first |
| 14 | | duly elected president being Freida Arrington, now Freida |
| 15 | | Roberts, in addition to establishing committees, setting dues, |
| 16 | | and more; and |
| 17 | | WHEREAS, Further, the members of the Waukegan Alumnae |
| 18 | | Chapter started fulfilling the critical functions of the |
| 19 | | sorority, including public service and social action |
| 20 | | initiatives, such as scholarships, voter |
| 21 | | education/registration events, public forums, health fairs, |
| 22 | | children's projects, and the Beautillion Militaire program and |
|

| 1 | | the Rites of Passage event for young men; and |
| 2 | | WHEREAS, The Waukegan Alumnae Chapter has continued its |
| 3 | | work in the community through a number of endeavors, including |
| 4 | | feeding the unhoused, conducting voter education/registration, |
| 5 | | supporting women in transition, awarding college scholarships, |
| 6 | | and implementing youth programs for boys and girls through |
| 7 | | EMBODI, the Delta Academy, and Delta GEMS; and |
| 8 | | WHEREAS, The Waukegan Alumnae Chapter has annually hosted |
| 9 | | its signature event, The Red, Black and Green function, since |
| 10 | | 1994, through which members raise money for community outreach |
| 11 | | and scholarship programs while simultaneously celebrating the |
| 12 | | beautiful and vibrant culture of the African American |
| 13 | | community; and |
| 14 | | WHEREAS, The Waukegan Alumnae Chapter has hosted two |
| 15 | | statewide Founders Day weekends, bringing members of Delta |
| 16 | | Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. together from across the State of |
| 17 | | Illinois to commemorate the sorority's founding on January 13, |
| 18 | | 1913; and |
| 19 | | WHEREAS, The Waukegan Alumnae Chapter has also annually |
| 20 | | joined sorority members from other chapters to engage with |
| 21 | | elected officials on Delta Days at the State Capitol in |
| 22 | | Springfield and Delta Days at the Nation's Capitol in |

| 1 | | Washington, D.C.; and |
| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Waukegan Alumnae Chapter, who |
| 3 | | wear crimson and cream, have served Lake County with |
| 4 | | dedication, enthusiasm, and perseverance for 45 years and will |
| 5 | | continue to do so; therefore, be it |
| 6 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE |
| 7 | | HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that |
| 8 | | we congratulate the Waukegan Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma |
| 9 | | Theta Sorority, Inc. on the occasion of its 45th anniversary, |
| 10 | | and we thank its members for their service and dedication to |
| 11 | | Lake County and the State; and be it further |
| 12 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
| 13 | | presented to the Waukegan Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta |
| 14 | | Sorority, Inc. as an expression of our esteem and respect. |
