HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to congratulate the Waukegan Alumnae
4Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. on the occasion of
5its 45th anniversary; and
 
6    WHEREAS, On November 3, 1979, the Waukegan Alumnae Chapter
7became an official chartered chapter of Delta Sigma Theta
8Sorority, Inc. through the efforts of 18 women, many with
9young families, who worked tirelessly to form a chapter in
10Lake County in the 1970s; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Upon becoming chartered, the members of the
12Waukegan Alumnae Chapter immediately established its
13organizational structure by electing officers, with the first
14duly elected president being Freida Arrington, now Freida
15Roberts, in addition to establishing committees, setting dues,
16and more; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Further, the members of the Waukegan Alumnae
18Chapter started fulfilling the critical functions of the
19sorority, including public service and social action
20initiatives, such as scholarships, voter
21education/registration events, public forums, health fairs,
22children's projects, and the Beautillion Militaire program and

1the Rites of Passage event for young men; and
 
2    WHEREAS, The Waukegan Alumnae Chapter has continued its
3work in the community through a number of endeavors, including
4feeding the unhoused, conducting voter education/registration,
5supporting women in transition, awarding college scholarships,
6and implementing youth programs for boys and girls through
7EMBODI, the Delta Academy, and Delta GEMS; and
 
8    WHEREAS, The Waukegan Alumnae Chapter has annually hosted
9its signature event, The Red, Black and Green function, since
101994, through which members raise money for community outreach
11and scholarship programs while simultaneously celebrating the
12beautiful and vibrant culture of the African American
13community; and
 
14    WHEREAS, The Waukegan Alumnae Chapter has hosted two
15statewide Founders Day weekends, bringing members of Delta
16Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. together from across the State of
17Illinois to commemorate the sorority's founding on January 13,
181913; and
 
19    WHEREAS, The Waukegan Alumnae Chapter has also annually
20joined sorority members from other chapters to engage with
21elected officials on Delta Days at the State Capitol in
22Springfield and Delta Days at the Nation's Capitol in

1Washington, D.C.; and
 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Waukegan Alumnae Chapter, who
3wear crimson and cream, have served Lake County with
4dedication, enthusiasm, and perseverance for 45 years and will
5continue to do so; therefore, be it
 
6    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
7HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
8we congratulate the Waukegan Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma
9Theta Sorority, Inc. on the occasion of its 45th anniversary,
10and we thank its members for their service and dedication to
11Lake County and the State; and be it further
 
12    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
13presented to the Waukegan Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta
14Sorority, Inc. as an expression of our esteem and respect.
