| 1 | HOUSE RESOLUTION | ||||||
| 2 | WHEREAS, Genetic counselors empower patients and their | ||||||
| 3 | families with vital healthcare information, guidance, and | ||||||
| 4 | emotional support to help them understand their family | ||||||
| 5 | history, evaluate genetic testing options, and make informed | ||||||
| 6 | choices based on test results; and | ||||||
| 7 | WHEREAS, There are over 150 certified genetic counselors | ||||||
| 8 | in Illinois working in prenatal, fertility, pediatrics, | ||||||
| 9 | metabolic, cardiovascular, neurology, and cancer care; and | ||||||
| 10 | WHEREAS, Many people benefit from increased genetic | ||||||
| 11 | sequencing research and genetic counseling, including anyone | ||||||
| 12 | with a condition linked to a specific gene or anyone who has a | ||||||
| 13 | family history of an inherited disease; and | ||||||
| 14 | WHEREAS, The 5,000 genetic counselors across the country | ||||||
| 15 | streamline the healthcare industry by ensuring the right tests | ||||||
| 16 | are being ordered, avoiding costly and unnecessary costs and | ||||||
| 17 | tests, by helping patients and providers understand complex | ||||||
| 18 | test results and how to best use this information, by helping | ||||||
| 19 | consult with potential parents on the intimidating potential | ||||||
| 20 | of passing on inherited diseases, by sharing information with | ||||||
| 21 | family members, and by providing recommendations for community | ||||||
| 22 | support services; therefore, be it | ||||||

| 1 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | ||||||
| 2 | HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
| 3 | we declare November 13, 2025 as "Genetic Counselor Awareness | ||||||
| 4 | Day" in the State of Illinois, and be it further | ||||||
| 5 | RESOLVED, That we recognize that the sequencing of the | ||||||
| 6 | human genome is one of the most significant scientific | ||||||
| 7 | accomplishments of the past hundred years and express our | ||||||
| 8 | support for genetic counselors, who are using this research to | ||||||
| 9 | improve the lives of many throughout the State. | ||||||
