1 SENATE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate wish to
3 remember the lives of Bartle and Dorothy Herrick of Downers
4 Grove, Illinois; and
5 WHEREAS, Bartle Herrick passed away on July 30, 1995, and
6 Dorothy Herrick passed away on April 22, 1999; Bartle and
7 Dorothy were married on July 12, 1947; and
8 WHEREAS, The Herricks were a vital part of the life of
9 Downers Grove; they owned and operated Herrick's Flower Shop
10 from 1947 until its closing on January 1, 1980; William
11 Herrick, Bartle's father, started the family business in 1905
12 after purchasing the Akon Greenhouse; with the family home
13 connected to the business, the entire family worked together
14 to keep the business thriving; and
15 WHEREAS, Dorothy Herrick took classes at LaGrange
16 Technical School and would teach her husband the business in
17 the evenings; he would work as a draftsman at Western
18 Electric during the day; Dorothy ran the business and handled
19 bookkeeping chores, and Bartle ran the counter and designed
20 floral arrangements; and
21 WHEREAS, The Herricks extended credit to those customers
22 that needed it, never took credit cards, and would accept
23 payments from high school students who stopped by, paying in
24 installments for their flowers for a school dance; and
25 WHEREAS, The couple were members of the First
26 Congregational Church of Downers Grove; Dorothy served on
27 boards and committees, taught third grade Sunday School, and
28 was active in the Women's Fellowship Ministry; she started
29 the prayer chain at the church as well; Bartle was remembered
30 for his sense of humor and his love of golf; and
31 WHEREAS, Bartle and Dorothy Herrick will be remembered by

1 their sons, William (Lynn) and James (Debra); their
2 grandchildren, John, Taylor, Tracy, Jim, and Samantha; and
3 their goddaughter, Wendy Konopka; therefore, be it
4 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FIRST GENERAL
5 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
6 all who knew and loved them, Bartle and Dorothy Herrick of
7 Downers Grove; together they made their story part of the
8 bigger story of Downers Grove; and be it further
9 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
10 presented to the family of Bartle and Dorothy Herrick.
