1 SENATE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, the purpose of the Illinois Freedom of
3 Information Act is to allow the general public a documented
4 right to access records and information related to State
5 matters; and
6 WHEREAS, the State of Illinois has a system of public
7 universities that provide students with a broad-based,
8 intellectual learning experience, preparing them for life
9 after college; and
10 WHEREAS, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign,
11 the University of Illinois at Chicago, Chicago State
12 University, Eastern Illinois University, Northeastern
13 Illinois University, Western Illinois University, Northern
14 Illinois University, Southern Illinois University at
15 Carbondale and Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville
16 are fine representatives of the public education
17 opportunities available in Illinois; and
18 WHEREAS, the Center of Equal Opportunity is a nationally
19 renowned research group, currently investigating the impact
20 of affirmative action policies on college admissions
21 requirements; and
22 WHEREAS, the Center for Equal Opportunity has requested
23 public records on college admissions under the Freedom of
24 Information Act from Illinois Universities; and
25 WHEREAS, all nine public university campuses have denied
26 the Freedom of Information request on the grounds that it is
27 "unduly burdensome"; and therefore be it
28 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FIRST GENERAL
29 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, That the University of
30 Illinois at Urbana Champaign, the University of Illinois at
31 Chicago, Chicago State University, Eastern Illinois

1 University, Northeastern Illinois University, Western
2 Illinois University, Northern Illinois University, Southern
3 Illinois University at Carbondale and Southern Illinois
4 University at Edwardsville be urged to promptly comply with
5 the Freedom of Information request submitted by the Center
6 for Equal Opportunity; and be it further
7 RESOLVED, that suitable copies of this resolution be
8 forwarded to the chancellors of all nine public Illinois
9 universities mentioned herein.
