 1                       SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION

 2        WHEREAS, The members of  the  Illinois  General  Assembly
 3    wish  to  express their sincere condolences to the family and
 4    friends of Clyde  Lee,  former  Illinois  State  Senator  and
 5    former  Illinois State Representative from the 46th District,
 6    who passed away on January 22, 1999; and

 7        WHEREAS, Clyde  Lee  was  born  in  Jefferson  County  on
 8    February  6, 1909; his parents were John and Belle Earls Lee;
 9    in 1935 he married Bernice M.  Rough  in  Mount  Vernon;  she
10    preceded him in death in 1994; and

11        WHEREAS,  Mr.  Lee  graduated  from Mount Vernon Township
12    High School in 1928; Mr. Lee was a bookkeeper for many  Mount
13    Vernon businesses, including Mount Vernon Car Shops and Mount
14    Vernon  Furnace  Company; Mr. Lee was a veteran of the United
15    States Marine Corps, serving in World War II; and

16        WHEREAS, Clyde Lee's career in State government began  by
17    first  serving  as  Treasurer of the Young Peoples Democratic
18    Club in 1932; he served as City Treasurer of Jefferson County
19    from 1933-1934, and as County Treasurer  from  1934-1938;  he
20    served  as a State Representative from 1938 to 1940, and then
21    as a State Senator from  1941  to  1945;  from  1947  to  his
22    retirement in 1966 he again served as a State Representative;
23    he was chairman of the House Agriculture Committee, president
24    of  the  Legislative  Council, and served on the Committee on
25    Higher Education; he served  a  total  of  26  years  in  the
26    General Assembly and 32 years in public service; and

27        WHEREAS,  Clyde Lee became the secretary-treasurer of the
28    Egyptian Trotting Association in 1966; he was a member of the
29    Amvets  Post  4  in  Mount  Vernon,  Amvets   Post   148   in
30    Waltonville,  a  longtime  member of the Presbyterian Church,
31    trustee of the West Salem Cemetery Association, a  member  of
32    the  Prairie  Historians,  the  Jefferson  County  Historical

 1    Society,   the   Illinois   State   Historical   Society   in
 2    Springfield, and was a Kentucky Colonel; and

 3        WHEREAS,   Clyde   Lee   is   survived  by  his  son  and
 4    daughter-in-law,  John  E.  Lee  and  Sarah;  his   daughter,
 5    Virginia  R. Lee; three grandchildren; and several nieces and
 6    nephews; therefore, be it

 7        RESOLVED, BY  THE  SENATE  OF  THE  NINETY-FIRST  GENERAL
 8    ASSEMBLY   OF   THE   STATE   OF   ILLINOIS,   THE  HOUSE  OF
 9    REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING HEREIN,  that  we  extend  to  the
10    family  and friends of Clyde Lee our fondest wishes for peace
11    at this time of loss; we remember a former State Senator  and
12    Representative  with thoughts of his dedication to the people
13    of  his  district;  we  lift  up  his  memory  through   this
14    resolution; and be it further

15        RESOLVED,  That  a  suitable  copy  of this resolution be
16    presented to the family of Clyde Lee.
