1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives offer our sincere congratulations to the 2000
4 York Community High School Boy's Track Team and Coach Joe
5 Newton on winning the Class AA State Championship Title on
6 May 27, 2000; and
7 WHEREAS, this singular accomplishment caps a remarkable
8 season that included a West Suburban Conference Title, the
9 establishment of several new school speed records, and the
10 York Duke's 246th Conference Title in more than 40 years of
11 outstanding competition; and
12 WHEREAS, senior Donald Sage won both the 3,200 meters and
13 the 1,600 meters, marking the first time a Class AA runner
14 has won the distance double back-to-back, and setting a new
15 national record in the 3,200 and a new school record in the
16 1,600; and
17 WHEREAS, Team members Pete Cioni, John Janulis, Adam
18 Palumbo, Donald Sage, Terre Mastrino, Adam Roche, Peter
19 Stasiulis, Dan Sloan, Ben Wallick, Neal Wilson, Tim Hobbs,
20 Matt Kiefer, Mike Gassman, Joe Fisher, John Casey, Bobby
21 Gunnells, Will Grosse, Gus Malecha, Chris Bishof, Tony
22 DiCianni, Dan Dziubski, Rob Harley, and Kevin Lawrence are
23 determined and superb athletes dedicated to their sport; and
24 WHEREAS, these team members brought Coach Joe Newton his
25 first state track championship title and the first for York
26 since 1939, leading the Dukes to achieve a state title in
27 both track and cross country competition in the same year, a
28 truly remarkable achievement; and
29 WHEREAS, we recognize the hard work and dedication of
30 legendary Coach Joe Newton, and Assistant Coaches Stan
31 Reddel, Charlie Kern, Tom Newton, Tom LaRocca and Vito

1 Purpura; and
2 WHEREAS, these outstanding young athletes have been a
3 source of great pride and honor to the school and the entire
4 community; therefore, be it
5 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
6 NINETY-FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
7 we offer our congratulations to Coach Joe Newton and the Duke
8 team on their State Championship Title; and be it further
9 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
10 presented to Coach Joe Newton, the Assistant Coaches, and the
11 Team members.
