 1                          HOUSE RESOLUTION

 2        WHEREAS,  The  members   of   the   Illinois   House   of
 3    Representatives  are pleased to honor milestones in the lives
 4    of citizens of the State of Illinois; and

 5        WHEREAS, Doris Whitten of Salem, Illinois has been  named
 6    the recipient of the Studs Terkel Humanities Service Award by
 7    the  Illinois Humanities Council in conjunction with her hard
 8    work promoting the history of Salem; and

 9        WHEREAS, Doris Whitten was nominated for  this  award  by
10    Salem Mayor Leonard E. Ferguson; and

11        WHEREAS,  Doris  Whitten  is  the  person with answers to
12    questions about Salem; from her knowledge of William Jennings
13    Bryan, the GI Bill of Rights, Miracle Whip  (all  have  their
14    origins  in Salem, to the Salem oil fields, to her ability to
15    provide historical and educational tours, Doris Whitten truly
16    is someone who makes Salem the Spirit and Space  of  Southern
17    Illinois; and

18        WHEREAS,  Doris  Whitten  has served as a member and Past
19    Chair of the Salem Historical and Patriotical Commission, the
20    City   and   County   Sesquicentennial    and    Bicentennial
21    Commissions, Chair of the Salem Tourism Board, Co-Chairman of
22    the  Little Egypt Parade, Chairman of the 50th Anniversary of
23    the GI Bill of Rights Celebration, the William Jennings Bryan
24    Mural Committee, and the Marion County Soldiers  and  Sailors
25    Reunion Committee; and

26        WHEREAS,  Doris  Whitten  has  received  numerous awards,
27    including the Modern Woodmen  Insurance  Outstanding  Citizen
28    Award, the Most Outstanding Women in Salem, the International
29    Who's  Who  in  Community  Service Award, the 1998 Chamber of
30    Commerce  Outstanding  Community  Service  Award,   and   was
31    nominated for the President's Volunteer Action Award; and she

 1    has  her  name  placed  on the "Wall of Fame" in the National
 2    Women's Hall of Fame in Seneca, New York; therefore, be it

 3        RESOLVED,  BY  THE  HOUSE  OF  REPRESENTATIVES   OF   THE
 4    NINETY-FIRST  GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
 5    we congratulate Doris Whitten on receiving the  Studs  Terkel
 6    Humanities   Service   Award  from  the  Illinois  Humanities
 7    Council; and be it further

 8        RESOLVED, That a suitable  copy  of  this  resolution  be
 9    presented to Doris Whitten.
