1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of this Body are honored and
3 delighted to recognize significant contributions to the
4 people of this State and the milestones in the history of the
5 institutions that make those contributions; and
6 WHEREAS, It has come to the attention of this House that
7 the Greater Walters A.M.E. Zion Church, located at 8400-22
8 South Damen Street in Chicago, is celebrating its 125th
9 anniversary this year; and
10 WHEREAS, The Greater Walters A.M.E. Zion Church, the
11 oldest A.M.E. Zion Church in Chicago, was founded in 1875 at
12 2830 South Dearborn Street; in 1894, fire destroyed that
13 building and a new church was erected in 1904 at 3800 South
14 Dearborn; the church remained at that location for 70 years;
15 and
16 WHEREAS, Reverend George W. Walker, Sr., became the 23rd
17 Pastor in 1972; he was later elevated to the Bishopric; in
18 1974, he led the congregation to its present location; and
19 WHEREAS, In 1988, Reverend Roy A. Holmes became the 24th
20 Pastor and continues to serve to the present time; and
21 WHEREAS, It is most appropriate that on this special
22 occasion we recognize the members of the Greater Walters
23 A.M.E. Zion Church and their Pastor, the Reverend Roy A.
24 Holmes, under whose inspired leadership, spiritual guidance,
25 goodwill, and Christian charity have been spread; therefore,
26 be it
27 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
28 NINETY-FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
29 we congratulate the congregation of the Greater Walters
30 A.M.E. Zion Church on the occasion of its 125th anniversary
31 and commend it for its outstanding record of service to God

1 and the people of this State; and be it further
2 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
3 presented to the Reverend Roy A. Holmes.
