 1                          HOUSE RESOLUTION

 2        WHEREAS,  The  members   of   the   Illinois   House   of
 3    Representatives  are saddened to learn of the death of former
 4    House member and beloved wife of former United States Senator
 5    Paul Simon, Jeanne Hurley Simon, who passed away  on  Sunday,
 6    February 20, 2000; and

 7        WHEREAS,  Jeanne Hurley and Paul Simon together served in
 8    the  Illinois  House  of  Representatives,   and   hold   the
 9    distinction of being the only members of the General Assembly
10    to be married while both were holding seats; and

11        WHEREAS,  The  partnership  blossomed with Jeanne and her
12    husband  working  together  on  his  many  successful   State
13    campaigns;  when  Paul Simon made a bid for the office of the
14    President in 1988, his  wife  stood  beside  him;  after  the
15    election,  Jeanne  Simon authored a book, Codename: Scarlett,
16    with the insights of the wife of  a  presidential  candidate;
17    and

18        WHEREAS,  Jeanne  Hurley  Simon  graduated from New Trier
19    High School in Winnetka, Illinois; she graduated  from  Barat
20    College  in  Lake  Forest,  and  Northwestern  University Law
21    School; in the mid-1950's she served as the President of  the
22    Women's Bar Association of Illinois; and

23        WHEREAS,  Before  her  election  to  the  Illinois House,
24    Jeanne Hurley Simon served as an assistant  state's  attorney
25    in  Cook County; upon her election to the Illinois House, she
26    sponsored a bill restricting  the  wiretapping  of  telephone
27    conversations; and

28        WHEREAS,  Jeanne Hurley Simon was the chair of the United
29    States  National  Commission  on  Libraries  and  Information
30    Science; she received the presidential  appointment  in  1993
31    and  the  reappointment  in  1997;  she  received an honorary

 1    degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana in 1998; and

 2        WHEREAS, In 1997 she joined Southern Illinois  University
 3    at  Carbondale  as  an adjunct professor of library services;
 4    together with her husband, they founded the SIU Public Policy
 5    Institute; and

 6        WHEREAS, Jeanne Hurley Simon is survived by her  husband,
 7    Paul  Simon;  her  daughter,  Sheila  Simon;  her son, Martin
 8    Simon; and her four grandchildren; therefore, be it

 9        RESOLVED,  BY  THE  HOUSE  OF  REPRESENTATIVES   OF   THE
10    NINETY-FIRST  GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
11    we mourn, along with her family, friends, colleagues, and the
12    people of the State of Illinois, the death of  Jeanne  Hurley
13    Simon; and be it further

14        RESOLVED,  That  a  suitable  copy  of this resolution be
15    presented to her husband, Paul Simon.
