 1                          HOUSE RESOLUTION

 2        WHEREAS, Mr. Billy Pierce was traded to the Chicago White
 3    Sox on November 10, 1948; and

 4        WHEREAS,  Mr.  Billy  Pierce  pitched  13  years  of  his
 5    all-star career for the Chicago White Sox; and

 6        WHEREAS, During his major league career, Mr. Billy Pierce
 7    accumulated the following awards and stellar statistics:  211
 8    wins; 1,999 strikeouts; 193 complete games; a 3.27 earned run
 9    average; 38 shutouts; and 5 one-hitters; he is the White  Sox
10    career  leader  in strikeouts with 1,796; he was the starting
11    pitcher for the American League in the 1953, 1955,  and  1956
12    All-Star  games,  and  was  a  member  of the American League
13    All-Star team in 1953, 1955,  1956,  1957,  1958,  1959,  and
14    1961;  he  was the 1956 and 1957 Sporting News Pitcher of the
15    Year; he accumulated more wins than any other pitcher for the
16    Chicago White Sox during the 1950's; and he  pitched  39  and
17    2/3  consecutive scoreless innings for the White Sox in 1953;
18    and

19        WHEREAS, Mr. Billy Pierce is already in the Hall of  Fame
20    of  Life based on his tireless community work, including work
21    on the behalf of the Shriner's Children's Hospitals  and  the
22    Chicago Baseball Cancer Charities; and

23        WHEREAS,  Mr.  Billy  Pierce has a lifetime record of 8-6
24    against Hall of Famer Whitey Ford and a  lifetime  record  of
25    7-2 against Hall of Famer Bob Lemon; and

26        WHEREAS,  Mr. Billy Pierce, despite having more wins than
27    at least 16 other pitchers in the Baseball Hall of Fame,  was
28    not  previously selected for induction into the Baseball Hall
29    of Fame; and

30        WHEREAS, The Old-Timers Committee of the Baseball Hall of
31    Fame is meeting in Tampa, Florida on  Tuesday,  February  29,

 1    2000  to  consider  the candidacy of Mr. Billy Pierce for the
 2    Baseball Hall of Fame; therefore, be it

 3        RESOLVED,  BY  THE  HOUSE  OF  REPRESENTATIVES   OF   THE
 4    NINETY-FIRST  GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
 5    we join Mr. Pierce's family,  friends,  and  White  Sox  fans
 6    across  this  great nation in urging the Old-Timers Committee
 7    of the Baseball Hall of Fame to grant to Mr. Billy Pierce his
 8    just reward for such an outstanding career, with enshrinement
 9    into the Baseball Hall of Fame; and be it further

10        RESOLVED, That a suitable  copy  of  this  resolution  be
11    delivered to the Old-Timers Committee of the Baseball Hall of
12    Fame.
